Aug. 10, 2007 - PRLog -- Report Buyer, the online destination for business intelligence for major industry sectors, has added a new report which states that in an increasingly time-pressed world, for Americans it's convenience over all other factors when it comes to buying food.

“On-The-Go Eating in the U.S.: Consumer, Foodservice, Retailing & Marketing Trends” states that busy Americans opt for foods that they can consume effortlessly at their desks, in their cars or while on the move from one task to another. They are increasingly spending on foods that are convenient, without worrying about price or even taste, notes the report.

Analysts note that on one hand 65% of consumers say they make regular attempts to eat healthier, but 33% say they simply cannot spare the time to cook or eat healthy meals. Factors like long-distance commuting to work, and pressure for time in two working parent families and single families forced 49 million Americans to fast food options, and 41 million to store-made, pre-cooked meals last fall, say authors of the report.

Altered consumer attitudes and habits are helping the trend towards on-the-go eating. With media reports constantly highlighting the health and weight-loss benefits to be had from eating frequent small meals and the onset of  portion control packaging, there has been a blurring in mealtime eating and snacks. The report says, a third of the US population regularly skips meals, and munches on snack food instead.

The study surveys how different food outlets like fast-food chains, restaurants grocery stores, convenience stores, and drugstores are adapting in order to bring in the millions of American consumers looking for quick food solutions. It also provides case studies and discussions of leading players including Subway, McDonald's, Wendy's, Chipotle, and Whole Foods.

The report surveys the escalating competition between restaurants and food retailers, outlines the shifting product trends, and identifies opportunities that foodservice providers and packaged goods marketers can target and develop.
