Aug. 2, 2007 - PRLog -- ACCRA, GHANA (July 14, 2007) - Ghana's Department of Children announced Friday the launch of a new initiative to address child trafficking through a partnership with the Student World Assembly (SWA). Under the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, the youth democracy organization will help implement a five-year National Agenda to advocate the eradication of child trafficking and child labor.

"We are honored to have our student activists recognized by the Department Children as advocates for trafficking victims," said Shahram Hashemi, Executive Director of the international non-profit. "Ghana's SWA members have proved themselves as exceptionally motivated leaders to combat these graves violations of human rights, and we congratulate them on this new partnership. " The University of Accra hosted SWA's 2007 Annual International Convention on Human Trafficking in March, where over 300 youth delegates convened to learn and take action on trafficking concerns.

SWA-Ghana is currently in collaboration with UNICEF-Ghana in a National Art & Essay Writing Contest. The theme of the competition is “Breaking the Chains & Silence: End Child Trafficking and Child Labor," challenging youth applicants to propose strategies for the eradication of child exploitation.

It is a deliberative assembly where all students can exchange views, vote on global issues through online discussion forums and international conventions, and take meaningful action. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we enable all students to participate, take action, and begin to think of themselves as global citizens.
