July 23, 2007 - PRLog -- Riding with two wheels can be challenging in its own respect.  Adding a wiggling dog friend into the mix certainly accelerates the challenges.  There are actually plenty of motorcycle enthusiasts out there who also love dogs and take them with them on trips.  Dogologie encourages all riders to think safety first when considering a dog companion on your motorcycle trips.

Before you start riding there’s a few basic things to do.  First you need to have a few on leash ground introductions. Bike sounds affect everyone differently.  Much like people, some dogs love motorcycles while others would rather stay in the house on the couch.   Keep your dog from flipping out.  A slow on the ground introduction to motorcycle is the best way to start.  If your pooch is small enough you should hold them while walking around running motorcycles.  This will help build confidence of safety and trust in you.

Work out how you are going to secure the dog while on the bike.   What mechanism will you be using for transport?  There are special made harnesses, back-backs and strap on carriers that all need careful consideration.  Then there’s all the cool dog biking gear.  Our four-legged friends get outfitted with all sorts of accessories, like goggles, helmets and jackets.  Dogologie carries some fun biking gear like west coast chompers t-shirts and a full assortment of doggles.  If you are looking for a helmet, leather jacket or even a pad to cover your tank, these are all accessories that can be special ordered for you.

Are you ready to roll?  After all the introductions, fitting of gear and testing of safety equipment you’re ready for an on the bike experience.   Place the dog in your designated travel location and start the bike.  Check the reaction here.  Heavy breathing, excessive panting and lip licking are all doggy signs of being nervous.  Should your dog seem anxious you might reconsider the ride.  Otherwise remember to keep the first couple of trips slow and short.  Stay close to home and keep a continual watch on the dog.  It should only take a few short introductions and your dog will be enjoying the freedom and fun of motorcycling.

Ride on all you bikers and dog lovers.  May you travels be fun, adventurous and safe.  We’d love to see your biking dog pictures so send them our way and we’ll post them in at www.dogpark.dogologie.com, email events@dogologie.com.
