July 12, 2007 - PRLog -- Even though tooth decay is not the same problem it used to be, it’s clear that may foods on the market are still responsible for much of what brings us to the dental office on occasion for that dreaded visit and examination. We all want to hear that we have no problems, but the fact remains, we so many starches and sugars each and every day and, collectively, as a whole we still face a long term “dental crisis”. You got to ask yourself if dental care is so easy to get, why are so many people unable to get major repairs done, such as implants, orthodontics or root canals? The problem is that these procedures at fairly pricey and not always necessities, so they end up on the back burner and, unfortunately, many people live their lives not getting the work done that they may have been wanting for a long time.

Starches and sugars are the two biggest culprits. Plaque builds and harbors bacteria that create acids that then proceed to destroy our teeth. Many people may be unaware of the entire process of tooth decay. Many people don’t understand it and therefore, they end up at the dental office quite often and if they don’t have a dental insurance plan like Cobra or Delta for instance, or they don’t have a discount dental plan, they are going to have a double painful visit. A root canal is one of the more painful experiences, albeit not the worst. There also quite expensive in most cases. A root canal can cost you $6-$1200 and if you have no group insurance or on the job health benefits, chances are, you’ll have a difficult time finding a reasonable dental insurance plan on an individual basis. Another alternative is a discount dental plan, such as the one offered by Ameriplan USA out of Dallas, TX. Ameriplan offers a discount benefits package that saves members up to 80% on dental services (usually about 50-70%) and it is available on an individual basis and so would be quite beneficial in many situations.

The best solution for these situations is to prevent them of course. The most important thing is keep the acid from forming on our teeth. In other words, brush often. A quick, light brushing is always beneficial at anytime. Be sure to floss most every tooth most every day. Plaque between the teeth can sit there for days. Also, drink water frequently in order to flush bacteria from your mouth and teeth in order to prevent lengthy exposure to acid. This will protect your teeth enamel and keep cavities from forming. Fluoride toothpaste is highly recommended by professionals in the industry, but may not be the best idea, since the efficacy and safety of fluoride is being widely debated by many doctors and scientists.

It is also a good idea to limit the amount of carbohydrate based foods that we eat. Anything with starch or sugar in it can be a problem for our teeth. Foods like candy, breads, sugar loafs, muffins, cookies, pastas and potatoes. These are some of the worst things we can eat. Not only are they bad for our teeth, but they can be bad for our bodies as well. The American waistline will most surely attest to that.  Additional measures you could take include getting a dental sealant applied. Ask your dentist about this special protective sealant that helps to prevent tooth decay.
