July 6, 2007 - PRLog -- St. Louis Mo. July 9th 2007: OCI announced today that it is releasing Version 1 of its open source DDS product now known as OpenDDS. The product has been used in beta mode for over a year and through the investments of OCI and its clients OpenDDS has been enhanced to the point where it is able to join the OCI suite of robust open source middleware products.

Dr Ebrahim Moshiri the CEO of OCI commented that for the last 8 years OCI had been offering exceptional service and value for its clients through its open source products. “OpenDDS offers many more years of standards based open architectures for mission critical middleware.”

Advanced Acoustic Concepts (AAC) is a sponsor and early adopter of OpenDDS. AAC has been a long time user of TAO (another OCI supported open source real time product) for many of its sonar and mission package suites. Rick Marlborough, an AAC Program Engineer, commented “OpenDDS provides us with a high performance middleware solution that complements our use of TAO. The increased performance provided by OpenDDS has been leveraged to provide the Navy with a new Tactical Training Environment, or TTE, that is used to train Navy surface fleet personnel in their use of SIPS (Scaled Improved Performance Sonar) system. It has been our policy to leverage open source technology to the greatest extent possible. Products like TAO and OpenDDS enable AAC to provide leading edge solutions, following an open source model, in a most cost effective manner.”

About OpenDDS
OpenDDS is an open source C++ implementation of the Object Management Group’s (OMG) Data Distribution Service specification. This specification targets the needs of real-time publish and subscribe middleware developers.  Many traditional products in the message oriented middleware market did not offer the standards compliance that many users have come to expect in their infrastructure systems. The OMG DDS approach offers real openness at many levels of its architecture and a rich set of Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. Performance testing has shown that OpenDDS has performance on par with proprietary products. OpenDDS is licensed using the generous Berkeley open source model. This model offers users complete freedom to use and modify the code base in order to satisfy their special needs. This is a critical need when building real time infrastructure systems. OpenDDS uses ACE, another OCI supported open source product, as its platform abstraction layer. The span of platforms that ACE supports enables OpenDDS to be made available across probably the widest range of platforms of any DDS product.

Initial Service Offerings
OCI will be adding a new “OpenDDS Programming with C++” class to its extensive suite of distributed systems courseware. OCI will also provide technical consulting support, software engineering services and bug fixes for OpenDDS under the same terms as its other distributions of open source products. The OpenDDS software, and patches, will be freely downloadable from the OCI web site. New versions of this commercially supported open source DDS implementation will be made available at reasonable intervals so that development organizations can lock into a predictable release and support model.
