In her latest book, When the Crow Sings:  A Novel, Jacqueline Wales tells one woman’s truth about a stigma that has affected countless other women. A story of a family caught up in shame, abuse and denial, it’s a powerful account that explores the history of mothers who abandoned their children, until one woman had the courage to break the chains of shame.

“The struggle for survival faced by three generations of imperfect women in Jacqueline Wales’ new book, “When the Crow Sings,” is so daunting and grim that it would kill the hardiest of human specimens.  But Wales’ lyrical gift for storytelling and graphic depictions of the dreary world faced by these women resonates with an absorbing authenticity.  I held my breath from the first page of the book.”   Rachelle Pachtman, Pachtman Communications, New York

When the Crow Sings is based on Wales’ own life experiences. Having left school and home at age 15, she found herself unmarried and pregnant by 19. At 20, she gave up her daughter for adoption. Children born out of wedlock, their abandonment, and the accompanying shame and sorrow have touched the lives of women from all corners of the world. In this very personal story, we experience the thoughts, the feelings and the complex family dynamics surrounding this family secret.

What others, from around the world, are saying about When the Crow Sings:

“From the very first page to the last of this exceptional story, I entered a world unknown to me. Touched very deeply by the experience, it haunted me for days, long after I had read the last page and closed the book.”   Renate Estiot, Berlin

“You have given your readers something to learn from, a certain empowerment to overcome their family situation.  … I see families who don't want to keep these secrets in the closet any longer using this book to feel not so alone in their struggle, to be free of the various human patterns that destroy so many people. Like it or not we are all part of everything that we inherited from our ancestors.”   Zoli Flemming. New Orleans

”Jacqueline Wales has captured a classic inter-generational family story.  Set against the backdrop of Scottish history spanning seventy-seven years, a young woman shares the history of her family with the daughter she has given up for adoption. … Based on her own family stories, Jacqueline Wales’ book works because it confronts the humanity in all of us; both the light and the dark of our existence.”   Andrew Miser, Personal Coach, Elysian Enterprises, Amsterdam

“When the Crow Sings is a riveting and a very moving (and horrifying) story. The book is emotionally powerful and stays with you. It feels real and fascinating, and you want so much for some love to come into Grace's or Alison's life, some chance for them to realize that the abuse they've been through is what's been making all their bad decisions for them. It should be a manual for abused children.”   Nancy Heikin, director “Manana” a short film, Paris
