Marathon of the Treasure Coast to be held March 6, 2016

Weekend Includes Fitness Expo, Marathon Rock and Run Festival and Races

STUART, Florida -- The 2016 Marathon of the Treasure Coast, hosted by Seacoast National Bank, will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2016, beginning and ending in Memorial Park. The race course is certified as a Boston Marathon Qualifying course. Pre-event activities will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5.  The 26.2-mile course will give runners the opportunity to see all of the beauty the Treasure Coast has to offer including water views, residential neighborhoods and historic downtown Stuart.  For complete details and registration, visit www.treasurecoastmarathon.com.

Race Director Frank Fender is working with a team of volunteers to help plan and execute the myriad details involved in an event of this scope for the Treasure Coast community.  “Our team of nearly 100 staff members, 300 volunteers, and local Treasure Coast runners is excited and honored to work with the strongest community leaders, including members of the City of Stuart, Martin Health System, Seacoast Bank, Terra Fermata, Proctor, Crook, Crowder & Fogal, SunTrust, Wallace, Akerman, Martin County and Sewall’s Point, to continue to develop a world-class event on the Treasure Coast.  Last year we had 1082 participants from 27 states and eight countries, and we hope to increase that participation this year,” says Fender.  “Whether you are an athlete, music enthusiast, philanthropist or a local business professional, we want to make this an event the Treasure Coast is proud to host each year to show off the great community we have here.”

A big addition to this year’s event is the American Olympian Jeff Galloway, who will be a keynote speaker and also run in the marathon.  Galloway was a member of the 1972 US Olympic Team and, in 1973, set a world record in the 10,000-meter distance.  Today, he remains a competitive athlete in Masters races and is best known as the founder of the Galloway Run-Walk-Run endurance method and for conducting a broad range of training programs. He has written over 20 books and writes a monthly column for Runner’s World magazine.

Terra Fermata will be hosting the Marathon Rock & Run Festival which will feature live music in a variety of venues including Terra Fermata on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and the Pasta Party on Saturday event.

Other race events on Marathon weekend will include: the Care Net 5K in Memorial Park, March 5 at 7 am;  a Kid’s Race, following the 5K around 7:30 am;  and a Runner’s Expo with fitness and related vendors at Flagler Place beginning at 8 am until 6 pm on Saturday.

The Marathon of the Treasure Coast will benefit 12 charities who are participating with fundraising activities. Charities participating this year are: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Elev8hope, Epilepsy Foundation of Florida, Suncoast Mental Health Center, M.E.'s Team Charitable Foundation, Bart's Blue Star Foundation, Care Net, Florida Oceanographic Society, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Palm Beach, Gulfstream Goodwill Industries, Voices for Children of Okeechobee, and the Southeast Florida Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. In 2015, the Marathon of the Treasure Coast donated $15,000 to 12 local organizations who collectively raised $23,040.
