StationSmarts’ CEO to Serve on NFPA Technical Committee

The Committee on Data Exchange for the Fire Service is Key to Smart Firefighting Efforts

IPSWICH, Mass. - Nov. 24, 2015 - PRLog -- Dave Rocco, CEO of StationSmarts, was recently appointed to serve on the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Technical Committee on Data Exchange for the Fire Service. The Committee is responsible for establishing criteria for the exchange and use of data in common formats critical to the support for decision making in all phases of fire service administration, planning, prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery. These criteria are outlined in NFPA 950 and NFPA 951, two standards critical to the smart firefighting initiative.

NFPA 950 provides a framework for software companies that are developing workflow and records management tools intended to improve fire department operations. NFPA 951 provides guidance for both software developers and fire departments to ensure that these new technologies operate within defined parameters and thus allow for data to be shared between departments and agencies, each of which may be using a different application.

“Our company was founded on the philosophy that data-driven decisions are smart decisions and that accessible information is a powerful management tool for fire departments,” said Dave Rocco, CEO of StationSmarts. “For the past few years, the NFPA has focused on smart firefighting—basically, trying to determine how fire services can make better use of data and technology to inform decisions and streamline department workflow and processes. Our software application has always been aligned with NFPA standards, and we are thrilled to be able to work with them on this important initiative.”

New technologies have the potential to impact fire departments on a massive scale, allowing them to gather more detailed information and analyze and use it in real-time. But if they don’t operate together, their value is limited. The NFPA Technical Committee on Data Exchange for Fire Service is developing the framework to ensure that the data collected can be shared across platforms and converted into actionable information to assist incident commanders, fire personnel and command staff.
