Infectious Disease Specialist Named Chair of Medicine At South Nassau Communities Hospital

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. - Nov. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Internationally recognized infectious disease specialist Aaron Eli Glatt, M.D., FACP, FIDSA, FSHEA, has been named chair of the Department of Medicine and division chief of infectious diseases at South Nassau Communities Hospital.

“Dr. Glatt is a respected physician leader and is in the forefront of medicine, epidemiology and infectious diseases in the medical community,” said Adhi Sharma, MD, South Nassau’s chief medical officer.  “His experience and acumen in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening and common infectious diseases such as pneumonia and shingles  to more complex infections such as those caused by HIV and MRSA will be of benefit to the communities and patients served by South Nassau.”

As chair of medicine, Dr. Glatt will lead the overall administrative, academic and clinical activities of the department of medicine and work closely with the other clinical departments, nursing and pharmacy leadership, and directors to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of high quality, patient-centered care.

Dr. Glatt has extensive administrative, academic, clinical and grant experience in healthcare. The former executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Mercy Medical Center, he was a full professor of clinical medicine (and former Associate Dean) at New York Medical College.  Prior to serving at Mercy, Dr. Glatt served as president and chief executive officer at New Island Hospital in Bethpage, NY, where he had been the Vice President of Medical Affairs from 2005-06. From 2003-05 he served as the medical director of Mercy Ambulatory Care Center and chairman of the Department of Medicine at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Bronx, NY.  His impressive career in healthcare also includes more than a decade of service at St. Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, where he served as director of Graduate Medical Education, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and chairman of Infection Control for this eight hospital system.

Board-certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases, Dr. Glatt earned a BA from Yeshiva University, where he was class valedictorian, and his medical degree from New York's Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. After completing his internship, residency, and chief residency in internal medicine at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, he completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the State University of New York Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn. He is also an ordained Rabbi, and is the Assistant to the Rabbi at the Young Israel of Woodmere.

The author of 200 scientific journal articles and presentations at national meetings and an internationally known medical and medical ethics lecturer, Dr. Glatt was a guest editor of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of North America and infectious diseases editor of Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. In addition, he has served on the editorial boards of major publications, has been a reviewer for many prestigious journals, and has served on many government, hospital, medical school and local public health committees.  Spokesman for the Arlington, Va.-based Infectious Diseases Society of America, his medical interests include general infectious diseases, infection control, Clostridium difficile, tuberculosis, fungal infection, occupational-related HIV seroconversion, appropriate antibiotic utilization and medical ethics.
