New Plug and Play Technology Could Improve Violin Playing

STOKE NEWINGTON, U.K. - Nov. 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Technology researchers at The University of Performing Arts Vienna are developing a system that uses sensors in the violin and on the violinist that link to a computer in order to provide information could help to improve daily playing, practice and performance.

The system in its fullest form will use several body worn and musical instrument integrated sensor setups in combination with a new data recording app, storage and server connectivity, server based data distribution, and visualisation, with possibilities for real time feedback.

Its developers envisage it having wide reaching and valuable possibilities when applied to daily teaching, practicing and on stage performance science, as well as helping with music medicine and psychology, and in aspects of writing and composing music.

The new system from Tobias Grosshauser, Alberto Calatroni, David Bannach and Gerhard Tröster is a development of PART (Performing Arts Technologies System), and measures parameters of force, motion, and posture with possible future parameters to include bow position, string level, bow rotation and string angle.

Opinion From A Violinist

Gary Bridgewood of Stoke Newington based dealers, repairers and restorers of fine stringed instruments Bridgewood and Neitzert says:

“The appliance of technology and science have certainly proved themselves to be very helpful in improving the performance and technique of athletes in sport, so it would be great if technology like this could help musicians. Many other studies have focused on learning more about the instruments themselves and where their characteristic tone and power comes from in terms of their design and construction. Learning more lessons from how we play them and how this can improved though could prove to be very helpful to players of all levels.”

Gary points out that in the meantime there are several tried and tested ways to develop as a player.

“This new system acknowledges the importance of daily practicing and playing routines and as every musician knows, regular practice, good teaching and or access to teaching resources, and having a suitable and well maintained instrument are all key factors in improving as a player.

We have a violin shop and workshop staffed with skilled craftsmen, and we can help players of all levels with all aspects of their instruments.  We sell fine stringed instruments, strings, and a wide range of accessories.  The workshop can undertake the whole range of repairs and restorations (http://www.vivaceviolin.com/sitepage/Repairs.html) on well as violins, violas, cellos, basses and bows, and on early and period instruments including lutes, viols and viola d’amores.
