POMONA, Calif. - Nov. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- The Farm at Fairplex, a 5-acre, fully operational agricultural gem located in Pomona where the LA Fair is held each year, is seeking participants for Family Volunteer Day on Saturday, November 21.  Local families are invited to a day adventure where they will help plant, sow seeds and harvest produce including eggplant, peppers, lettuce, radishes, beets and herbs, announced Don Delano, a horticulturist who oversees the Farm at Fairplex.  All proceeds from the sale of harvested produce help fund farm and agriculture-related educational programs offered by the nonprofit The Learning Centers at Fairplex.  Those interested are encouraged to register by calling 909-865-4200 or emailing volunteers@fairplex.com.

Coordinated by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, Family Volunteer Day celebrates the power of families who work together to support their neighbors and neighborhoods. Each year, thousands of families use the day to teach children valuable, real-life lessons about compassion and caring. Volunteering is an ideal way for kids and adults to develop skills, learn more about their communities and make friends.

“The metropolitan Los Angeles area is known for a lot of things, but not for being a farming community,” said Delano.  “Having this gem right in our backyard means that we can introduce locals to a whole new world where they can learn the basics of farming and utilize their newfound skills at their own homes.  So what better time than Family Volunteer Day to serve as a starting off point.”

Volunteers are encouraged to meet at The Farm at Fairplex (1101 W. McKinley, Pomona – enter at Gate 12 on White Ave.) at 8 am for orientation and assignment of duties.

One of the largest urban farms in Los Angeles, The Farm at Fairplex grows more than 100 organic specialty crops of vegetables, fruits and herbs each year.  The produce are served at Sheraton Fairplex Hotel & Conference Center, McKinley’s Grille, onsite “farm to table” dinners and at the La Verne Farmers Market.
