LITCHFIELD, Conn. - Nov. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- Enjoy online learning and engaging discussion at the Oliver Wolcott Library with the Monday Scholars! Monday Scholars combines the best of online learning with face-to-face classroom discussion!

This session’s course will be Shakespeare: Comedies and Histories and will be taught by Peter Saccio who is Leon D. Black Professor of Shakespearean Studies and Professor of English Emeritus at Dartmouth College. OWL’s Book Club Liaison, Cameron Bove, will facilitate a group discussion. Participants only need to come ready to engage their minds and participate in discussion.

Shakespeare: Comedies and Histories introduces Shakespeare’s plays and explains the achievement that makes him the leading playwright in Western civilization. We will consider how his plays have been valued by four centuries of readers and how they have been interpreted and reinterpreted by the generations who have read and seen them. The lectures also consider the kind of theater for which he wrote, the characteristic structures of his plays, and the way the plays easily mingle events from different realms: different social levels, different levels of realism, and different metaphysical contexts.

Dr. Peter Saccio was honored with the J. Kenneth Huntington Memorial Award for Outstanding Teaching at Dartmouth College. He also served as a visiting professor at Wesleyan University and at University College in London. He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Professor Saccio is the author of Shakespeare’s English Kings, which has become a classic in its field. He is the editor of Thomas Middleton’s comedy A Mad World, My Masters, andfor the Oxford Complete Works of Thomas Middleton. Professor Saccio is also an accomplished actor and theatrical director. He directed productions of Twelfth Night, Macbeth, and Cymbeline, and devised and directed several programs of scenes from Shakespeare and from modern British drama.

Copies of the plays will be available to borrow one month before the start of the program. Light refreshments will follow the event. All Oliver Wolcott Library events are free and open to the public.
