Why One Publisher Rejects the Label "Christian"

"If we call ourselves a Christian publisher and fail to live up to your definition of the term, you might question our integrity."

Nov. 17, 2015 - PRLog -- While Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolina’s primary mission in fiction is to reach readers outside the church, the publishing company refuses to call itself "Christian."

"We do not consider ourselves to be a Christian publishing company," says Eddie Jones, Founder and CEO of LPC. "Only an individual can become a Christian. I’m certain most of our authors and editors would say they are Christian, but only God knows the heart of an individual."

Though the small press has enjoyed success selling into the Christian market, Jones explains that the company's main goal is to reach those readers who want a clean, wholesome read without a sermon. "Our primary mission in fiction is to reach readers through vivid, powerful stories that present moral truths. In one sense, Christian authors have an advantage over secular writers. They already have plenty of examples of great stories that challenge readers to change attitudes and actions."

Jones list several examples:

The Prodigal Son – a story of a parent’s unconditional, long-suffering love. Possible themes: trust, hope, and the importance of home and family.

The Good Samaritan – a story of inclusiveness. Possible themes: tolerance, institutional pride, religious hypocrisy, service, and generous giving.

The Hidden Treasure – a story of an individual’s journey to find his purpose. Possible themes: Passion, perseverance, risk and commitment to a noble cause.

Jones explains, "A great writer can shape a story to move the reader without relying on ‘Christian’ words. This is our goal at LPC."

During November many of LPC's fiction titles are priced at $1.99 on Kindle, Nook, iBook, and Kobo.

LPC authors include Christy Award winners, debut novelists, and nonfiction writers. The publisher welcomes submissions from authors with the heart of a servant. Learn more at: http://lighthousepublishingofthecarolinas.com/submissions/
