FLINT, Wales - Nov. 13, 2015 - PRLog -- A talented UK cake artist has won Gold and first place at Birmingham Cake international this weekend (6th, 7th &8th  November) creating a masterpiece cake using a world first technique of using 240 pieces (8 boxes) of shredded wheat to create a life like anti gravity sloth cake.

You might be forgiven for thinking that this Sloth is the feature in the latest David Attenbourough series – but in actual fact its all edible and off the menu, fornow!

Vicki Smith, 28 from Incredible Edibles in Flint ,North Wales took 115 hours to create this showstopper, and boy it was just that! She astounded judges with her world first technique of using pieces of shredded wheat individially inserted between strips of fondant to create the jaw dropping fur effect. This is not the first sloth cake Vicki has turned her hand too.

Last month Vicki created Neil the Sloth as part of the bakers Unite to Fight collaboration, creating awareness for endanagered animals which supported the WWF and she fell in love with the little endangered creature so much that she wanted to recreate one for the show, creating awareness for the speices while showcasing her techniques to be judged and to take her sloth making skills to another level, the ultimate sloth off!

she said: “This cake pushes the boundaries as it’s practically an anti-gravity cake, giving the viewer the illusion that it’s hanging from the tree but there’s a lot of internal support inside. The structure is made from scratch by me using copper piping, thread rods nuts, bolts and wood to craft a sturdy frame which is then made food safe before adding any edible materials”

A host of ingredients were used to create the sloth including 1,600g of chocolate, 10kg of sugar paste and eight boxes or 240 pieces of Shredded Wheat, yes thats right, Wheat!

Vicki not only created the sloth but a whole realistic scene over which the sloth hangs. From edible leaves and bugs, to frogspawn crated from sugar and even tadpoles that at first glace could fool you into thinking they were actualy moving! The water, which is made from piping gel also has a sence of movement with fine ripples and even a splash effect from the sloths hand which adds movement to the piece. A skillfully crafted dragonfly with delicate handpainted gelatin wings hovers over the piece which brings life and character to it.

The time and love thats gone into this piece is truly breathtaking and lots of people were lucky to see it in the flesh, or should I say fur over the weekend at birmingham NEC.

The 28-year-old added: “People have been so amazed and I have had so many lovely comments, both at the show and after online. The reaction when I told people the fur was Shredded Wheat was priceless, and im so glad the judges didn't decide to try my edible moss as some of it was made by inserting chilli flakes and other various herbs into the outer sugarpaste, they would have had a nasty hot suprise otherwise”

Vicki went on to describe her feelings during the making of this cake, “It was definitely a love, hate relationship, especially now ive created two.  Adding the fur individually and sometimes in strips  was a painstaking task and getting my hands in and round small body parts without breakages proved difficult but was all worth it when the isomalt eyes went in and I instantly fell in love and if I went through a bit of pain to create a small difference in terms of awareness then I'm truly happy”

A little bird tells me this wont be the last we see of Vicki, this talented Flintshire cake artist has bagged Best in show with her amazing, life-like turtle cake and won many gold awards, she is currently planning her next creations and continues to make some of the most incredible cakes you have ever seen.
