Florida: “Super” El Nino Set to Disrupt the 2016 Tourist Season

Scientists confirm that the Pacific Ocean’s temperature is rising. El Nino is expected to strike during the winter of 2015-2016. Florida may see an El Nino event similar to the record breaking weather events that caused serious damage in 1997.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Nov. 13, 2015 - PRLog -- Scientists believe that a record-breaking El Nino is on its way. El Nino events are caused almost entirely by a changes in the wind. The wind will slow down and can even reverse direction, bringing warm water toward the Eastern Pacific Ocean. El Nino occurs roughly every two to seven years with varying degrees of intensity. Although a change in the water temperature may not seem like a big deal, even a slight change can have extremely damaging effects.

For Florida, and the rest of North America, it likely means a significant increase in precipitation, and increases in catastrophic weather events like typhoons and hurricanes from the Pacific Ocean. Conditions like these will obviously have a negative effect on tourism in South Florida.

A record-breaking El Nino occurred in 1997. Experts are predicting that this year will be much worse. This is especially concerning given the fact that the 1997 El Nino killed an estimated 23,000 people and caused $45 billion in damage. This year, scientists have recorded increased water temperatures of roughly 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of increase has only been recorded three times in the past 65 years. These higher water temperatures are predicted to last into the early 2016 spring.

The phenomenon is expected to affect fishing and tourism in 2016. When sunny Florida is predicted to be increasingly wet, tourism will likely drop as well. El Nino is also known to double the chances for winter tornados in South Florida. Flooding is also anticipated. Even though there are many predictions about what may occur, the truth is that every El Nino event is different and it is impossible to predict the full effect of the phenomenon.

El Nino this year is different in a couple respects. First, it started unusually early. Generally, El Nino will start around June, but this one started in March. Scientists surmise that this could be because warm water was still lingering from last year’s relatively mild El Nino. It is also unusual that it is the second El Nino within two years, particularly because El Nino will generally skip at least one year before occurring again.

The strange weather occurrences will affect more than just the tourism in Florida. El Nino is an event where a pool owner may want to take some steps to prepare. Although pool owners cannot completely keep debris out of and away from their pool, they can still put forth a little effort to avoid some of it.

For example, pool owners should try to keep the water in their pool in order to avoid damage to the bottom and sides of the pool. Pool equipment should be completely turned off prior to the storm hitting, if possible. Do not cover the pool. Covering the pool can actually cause more damage because high winds may lift the cover, causing damage to the cover and surrounding property.

The Pool Doctor of the Palm Beaches can help pool owners prepare for El Nino by providing information about storm preparation and Palm Beach pool service. They can also help pool owners repair any damage that the storm may cause. However, using simple steps can help prevent serious damage.
