“Grampa” Finally Learns to Ride a Bike

Sarasota, Florida. Rich Bergman, a local community activist and author of several children's books (Not As Much As I Love You, Sarah Seahorse Wants a Family, Rocco the Platypus Gets Bullied, and Rocco The Platypus Meets Herman the Bully) never learned to ride a bike as a child. Knowing how he missed out on the fun of riding a bicycle, he taught his children from a very early age to ride and they always receivedtricycles and then bikes for their birthdays. He even made sure his grandchildren had their own bicycles. They are all bike enthusiasts today!

Rich is a very active parent and grandparent and, as a family, he and the children traveled often, had many adventures and did many activities, except riding bicycles together. Finally, one day his grandchildren decided it was time for Grampa to learn to ride and they took over. They gave him a bike for his 60th birthday, got him up on it, helped him balance and held on till Grampa took off. Since that day, Rich has been able to ride his own bicycle and join his grandchildren for family bike rides.

With Rich’s love of family life and his desire to show kids that you can conquer your fears at any stage of life, he has written a wonderful children’s book about his experience using polar bears as the main characters.
