SARASOTA, Fla. - Nov. 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Roskamp Institute – A Sarasota-based, non-profit research institute dedicated to finding therapies for neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders – will host an open house on Friday, November 13th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for veterans and military. Roskamp Institute will be showcasing the parts of their research and clinical programs that have particular relevance to veterans, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Gulf War Illness (GWI), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Tours of the facility will also be given. Friends, family and others interested in the Institute’s research are welcome to attend.

Roskamp Institute’s TBI research program began because of the known link between traumatic brain injuries and Alzheimer’s disease, a core part of the organization’s scientific research. In response to their findings, the Institute placed a more significant focus on active and former military personnel, examining a range of conditions that had an impact on neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative health.

“Our veterans programs have been expanding significantly, as more patients come to our clinic suffering from issues of specific interest to veterans,” said President and C.E.O of Roskamp Institute Fiona Crawford. “Treatments for conditions suffered by our military exist, but many of them have no widely demonstrated diagnostics or proof of effectiveness – and we are trying to address that. We want all veterans to know there is hope and that we are working day and night to find effective therapies and get them into the clinic.”

In a 2013 Congressional Research Service report conducted by to the United States Congress, more than 200,000 veterans enrolled with the US Department of Veterans Affairs for healthcare benefits have a diagnosis associated with TBI and 30 percent of its patients who served in Iraq and Afghanistan screen positive for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. According to another study conducted by the Veterans Administration, Gulf War Illness affects at least one-fourth of the 697,000 U.S. veterans who served in the 1990-1991 Gulf War.
