According to the Florida Suicide Prevention Coalition (http://www.floridasuicideprevention.org/the_facts.htm), suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Florida with 2,961 cases reported in 2014. In a 2010 survey of more than 2,000 Sarasota middle school students, 18 percent admitted they had thought about suicide, and 11 percent had a specific plan how to end their lives.

The latest Florida Department of Education (http://www.fldoe.org/schools/safe-healthy-schools/safe-schools/bullying-prevention.stml) statewide report (http://www.fldoe.org/schools/safe-healthy-schools/safe-schools/sesir-discipline-data/discipline-incident-data/statewide-report-on-school-safety-disc.stml) on school safety and discipline shows that more than 3,800 total incidents of bullying in Florida schools was reported in the 2013-2014 school year. Sarasota district schools reported 24 total incidents of bullying.

The performances are made possible by Embracing Our Differences, a not-for-profit organization based in Sarasota that uses the power of art and education to expand consciousness and open the heart to celebrate the diversity of the human family. It accomplishes this through an annual, large-scale outdoor juried art exhibition and a comprehensive series of educational initiatives, programs, and resources designed for teachers and students.

Since 2004, downtown Sarasota's Island Park has been the backdrop for Embracing Our Differences’ colorful, larger-than-life canvases integrating powerful imagery and thought-provoking messages celebrating diversity. The annual outdoor exhibits are the heart of a year-round program of activities designed to use the arts as a catalyst to create awareness and promote diversity.

The Houston-based Allstar Nation Tour has exploded in popularity since its debut in August 2014. The tour has performed more than 100 assemblies for more than 100,000 students and faculty at more than 100 schools in Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, Florida, and Oklahoma.
