ORLANDO, Fla. - Nov. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Several legendary Black celebrities in entertainment and sports will join a multitude of volunteers during the nation’s largest-ever homeless service event and resource fair called “He Got Up.”  Scheduled for Easter 2016 (March 27) in the Orlando Citrus Bowl, “He Got Up” will be the first event in an ongoing collaboration led by the Orlando Serve Foundation to leverage existing resources to assist those in need on a path towards self-sustainability.

Rev. Tim Johnson, Senior Pastor of the Orlando World Outreach Center believes He Got Up will provide as many as 30,000 homeless and families in need across the Orange, Osceola and Seminole tri-county area with employment opportunities, food, clothing, medical and dental screenings, and legal services.

Among the celebrities lending support for the event are musician Thomas McClary, co-founder and lead guitarist for The Commodores; NFL Hall of Famer Art Monk of the Art Monk Companies; Super Bowl Champion Fred Stokes of Fred Stokes Foods, LLC; and four-time MLB World Series Champion Darryl Strawberry of the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center.

According to a 2015 report by the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness, more than 26,000 children across Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties — or one out of every 17 — spent at least part of last year homeless.  Those figures include children living in shelters, rent-by-the-week motels, cars and vans.

“The homeless numbers are staggering, but the need extends beyond the homeless,” Johnson said.  “The greatest poverty in our society is being unwanted, unloved and uncared for. Our goal with He Got Up is to address this incredible need in Central Florida by demonstrating our love for our neighbors in a dignified way by showing them we care through this day of celebration and service that addresses many of their spiritual and material needs in one location.”

He Got Up will be open to all, and will begin with an uplifting Easter service that will feature celebrities, inspirational speakers and talented musical acts.  The event will the continue with a separate community resource fair designed to connect people in need with a host of resources, as well as an onsite job fair with the goal of helping lift more families out of poverty.

The event and organizers have commitments from a number of sponsors, including Pepsi, Full Sail, Clean the World, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, Florida Citrus Sports, Kirby Rentals, GameDay, Universal Studios Florida, the City of Orlando, and ClearChannel, that are providing everything from financial donations and in-kind support to transportation and food and beverage for the event.  Organizers plan to stock the Citrus Bowl’s concession stands with food and beverages that will be available at no cost to guests.

Organizers are looking for as many as 5,000 volunteers.

“He Got Up will be a catalyst that bridges individuals and families in need with organizations and neighbors who can offer help and demonstrate their love for their community through their actions as well as their words,” Johnson added.
