By: Ozaru Books When Gloom and Brightness Meet is the third novel by Kentish author Sally Aviss, completing the Cairnmor trilogy, which began with The Call of Cairnmor and continued with Changing Times, Changing Tides. The first book, set on the fictional Scottish Isle of Cairnmor, involved a quest to solve the mysterious disappearance of two people and their unborn child, heirs to a vast fortune. The stage moved from Cairnmor to London, Oxfordshire and Glasgow, during the years 1936-1937. In the second, the familiar characters entered darker times, against a backdrop of conflict, betrayal and bravery. War interfered, and their lives were tossed from London to Singapore, then the turmoil of Dunkirk and D-Day. Later, love appeared to triumph, but events then moved in a totally unexpected direction… The final novel brings the Stewarts through permissive times into the modern era, moving from the crystal waters surrounding Cairnmor to the seedier side of New York and back. As if Katherine’s early life had not been dramatic enough, she now finds different generations of her family battling infidelity, addiction and even a murder trial. Her beloved Scottish isle once more provokes passion and supplies solace in equal measure, while its extreme environment challenges their resourcefulness. Naval officers, journalists, botanists and lawyers - none are immune to the power of romance. It is a life-affirming and uplifting tale suitable for young adults to those of mature years. Excerpt: "She was calling, calling, but no sound came from her lips. She tried again and again but it was always the same. She reached out to him but he kept disappearing, slipping through her fingers, obscured by mist and darkness. She needed him. He had always come to her when she needed him. Why wasn’t he here? Why didn’t he come to her? Anna Stewart woke up with a start; sweating, anxious, afraid in the darkness."
