NEWPORT, R.I. - Nov. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- The Offshore Racing Association (ORA) announced the winners of the 2015 Offshore Racing Rule (ORR) West Coast Championship Series – Southern Division. Taking first place was Edward McDowell’s Grand Illusion, a Santa Cruz 70. This year’s winning boats raced in conditions from light to heavy winds as well as both close-course and ocean racing events. Over 25 boats qualified for scoring in the Southern Division of the 2015 West Coast Championship Series.

Southern Series Winners

• First Place:  Grand Illusion - USA 97 - owned by Edward McDowell

• Second Place:  Pyewacket - USA 678 - owned by Roy P. Disney & Chuck Nichols

• Third Place:  Bolt - USA 28385 - owned by Craig Reynolds

The top three finishers of the 2015 Series are a combination of past winners and a first-time top three finisher. This is the third time for Grand Illusion being in the top three, working its way up from 3rd in 2013, 2nd in 2014 and cementing a win this year. Second place finisher, Pyewacket, owned by Roy P. Disney and Chuck Nichols, held previous ORR wins in 2013 and 2014. “I have always really enjoyed racing under the ORR because it is, without doubt, the fairest measurement rule out there,” stated Disney after hearing of his 2nd place finish.

The West Coast Championship Series began in 2013. The 2015 Southern Series included: Island Race, Corum Cup, NHYC Cabo Race, Newport to Ensenada Race, Transpac Race and the Long Point Race Week. Races that are included in the Championship Series are not required to run under ORR as boats are re-scored as long as they hold a valid ORR certificate. This allows for a much more inclusive format for cruiser-racers to participate in a fair format. Winners will receive custom brag flags and engraved award plates.

ABOUT ORA and ORR

The Offshore Racing Association (ORA) owns and administers the Offshore Racing Rule (ORR). ORR is intended to be a non-type forming measurement rule that fairly rates properly designed and prepared boats equipped for offshore racing. ORR has the ability to rate Grand Prix Racers against the Racer Cruiser or Cruiser. The VPP technology is the best available worldwide, continually improving as it incorporates systematic research and scientific methods in predicting relative time allowances between boats of different sizes, types and ages to achieve the fairest possible ratings.

The ORR continues its strong growth and is now used in the following events: TransPac Race, Newport Bermuda Race, Chicago Mackinac Race, Pacific Cup, Ensenada Race, New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, Rolex Big Boat, Puerto Vallarta Race, Cabo Race, Marion Bermuda Race, Aldo Alessio Race, Corum Cup, Verve Cup, Islands Race, Annapolis to Newport Race, Phyllis Kleinman Swiftsure Cup, Mexorc, Ocean Race North, Marblehead to Halifax Race, Hamilton Trophy, The Corinthians Yacht Race, Ft. Lauderdale to Charleston Race, Charleston Race Week, Fast 50 Class, SoCal 300 and many more.
