Follow on Google News | Contaminated Groundwater and Soil Treatment Case Study with Steam Remediation Systems UKMany people who suffer with land which has become contaminated by oils or other chemicals are unaware of the correct terminology for treatment. The following case study by Cornelsen UK explains the process and benefits.
By: Cornelsen UK By the injection of a steam / air mixture the substrate is heated mainly by convection. Contaminants which are liquids at normal temperatures evaporate quickly into the gaseous phase where they are recovered by a soil vapour extraction (SVE) system. The water/pollutant mix ensures this occurs well below 100 oC (the point of steam distillation) Solutions to Contaminated Groundwater and Soil Areas Resolve land contamination issues with Steam Injection treatments and systems from Cornelsen. By the injection of a steam / air mixture the substrate is heated mainly by convection, this injection of steam is continually monitored as it permeates into the saturated zone, whilst at the same time working to induce the mobilisation of contaminants leading to the volatilisation of the compounds within the aquifer. Cornelsen - Experts in In Situ Steam Sparging Remediation Cornelsen demonstrate many years of experience developing and delivering a wide range of soil remediation and groundwater remediation systems including In-situ thermal destruction (ISTD), steam injection, In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) as well as more typical SVE, DPE and MPE systems throughout Europe and beyond. Their ATEX rate remediation feasibility pilot testing system (Pilot Trailer) is State of the Art complete with remote data logging. The project was an emergency response to deal with the sudden loss of a large mass of dichloromethane into a very permeable formation. Cornelsen installed the remediation system complete with all steel SVE and Steam / air injection pipework to 22 steam injection wells and over 100 SVE wells within the required timeframe and commenced steam/air injection on schedule. In addition to the steam generator, the remediation system included a 2000m3/hr SVE system with an air blast cooler and heat exchangers to cool the incoming soil gases down to acceptable safe levels thus dramatically optimising activated carbon consumption. The remediation system included pneumatic total fluids pumps and a groundwater treatment system. TCE and Toluene – Southeast UK, AECOM and Tamdown Regeneration: The project included the use of high temperature pneumatic total fluids pumps for de-watering, SVE, high vacuum, multi-phase extraction, heat exchange and groundwater and vapour treatment systems. Operating internationally from the UK and Germany and widely recognised for excellence in remediation system design, process safety and compliance, Cornelsen guarantee our competence to operate, maintain and above all optimise our systems day in day out to meet project performance and up-time specifications.
