The special goes into detail uncovering the scope of Prop 13 and its effects on arts programs throughout the educational world. “We are excited about the premiere and the support of PBS to help us share a powerful message of the importance of the arts for kids,” says Marcus Flye, Executive Producer. “For me, the arts have truly transformed my life. Being involved with the arts was everything for my career,” says Rodney Allen Rippy, Executive Producer. "Rise and Shine" builds its case for the importance of the arts by sharing one on one interviews with experts in the arts like Laverne Brunt, former principal from 32nd Street Arts Magnet, and Rory Pullens, current head of the arts branch. Guest celebrities include Carol Burnett, Robert Townsend, Shirley Jones, Dionne Warwick, Loretta Divine, Fergie from the Black Eye Peas, Cedric the Entertainer, and Danny Trejo. The theme of the special is driven behind the true life stories of children gifted in the arts. It tells the stories of a select group of LAUSD kids whose lights shine bright and whose lives were enhanced and transformed after participating in musical productions with Mr. Flye. “Rise and Shine" is produced by Flye Entertainment.
