Gary's future is up for debate on Halloweeen!

Oct. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- Gary In, October 30, 2015:  Tomorrow on Halloween the candidates for mayor will debate at 10:00 am @ Indiana University Northwest Savannah, at3400 Broadway Gary, IN. Finally the citizens will hear from incumbent mayor of Gary Karen Freeman Wilson who hasn’t participated in the previous debates. The mayor admitted to the Chicago Tribune she's not running a traditional campaign of knocking on doors, passing out fliers and trying to meet as many people as possible. Some could perceive that as arrogance considering she is the highest paid mayor in the entire state of Indiana. “I have the benefit of incumbency” says the democratic Mayor.

Despite the rise in violence Gary’s voting percentage has stayed below 22%. In August of 2014 there had been 19 murders in Gary. This year, it's already up to 40 and counting.

Sy Smith, a candidate for mayor of Gary, has invited the Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson, Gary Police Chief Larry McKinley and other community activists to demonstrate a non-political solidarity between the department and the citizens of Gary to engage in the violence and crime issues together but has had no response. Although city officials said they can't turn around that trend by themselves it seems to be a lack of effort to work with existing organizations. Smith says “It is imperative the citizens of Gary attend and engage in this debate tomorrow”
