WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Oct. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- A tragic event occurred at a residential pool in North Richland Hill, Texas. A 4-year-old boy drowned in the pool while playing in the backyard on August 16, 2015. This tragic event showcases the importance of having safety protocols in and around residential pools. Pool Doctor of the Palm Beaches, a Florida pool maintenance and installation expert, supports having pool safety procedures in Palm Beach.

During this heartbreaking episode, the boy’s mother was inside, but he was accompanied by two other children who were 5 and 7. The children were told to stay away from the pool, but when his mother looked outside, she found her son floating in the pool. Pool owners in the Palm Beach area can take a pool safety lesson from this this mother’s tragedy.

Child drownings are a serious problem in warmer states like Texas and Florida. In fact, according to the Florida Department of Health, drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4 in Florida. In fact, Florida has the highest death rate in the nation for children in this age range. Swimming pools are by far the most common location for these accidents.

The Florida legislature has recognized the serious problem that accidental drownings impose on the state. For the safety of children, older adults, and all Florida residents, Florida law sets out several safeguards that residential pool owners must follow. For example, residential swimming pools must pass a safety certification program that requires the pool owner to have either a barrier, safety cover, exit and entry alarms, or doors that have self-closing latches.

These safety precautions may not always be enough to prevent accidental drownings, however. The Center for Disease Control and the Florida Building Commission both emphasize that children should be supervised around pools at all times because drownings can happen very quickly. The Center also suggests using a fence that completely separates the pool from the rest of the yard and the house.

Parents should also teach and emphasize pool safety to their children. The Center suggests swimming lessons and cites the American Academy of Pediatrics for the fact that even children as young as one can benefit from swimming lessons. Studies indicate that formal swimming lessons can reduce the occurrence of drowning by up to 88 percent.

Safety tips from the Children’s National Health System also suggest creating a buddy system so that children are never swimming alone. Other pool safety suggestions include learning CPR and teaching children to avoid playing around drains and suction outlets in pools. Teaching children not to go into or near water without an adult present will also help prevent accidents. The Center for Disease Control also encourages life jackets for young children. Keep in mind, however, that floatation toys like water wings or noodles cannot replace a life jacket.

The Pool Doctor of the Palm Beaches supports measures to ensure that residential pools are used safely. Residential pools are a great way to relax, exercise, and create family togetherness when used properly. Practice Palm Beach pool safety by using these tips.
