“During a recent audit I was asked a question that traditionally would have taken 15-30 minutes to search, locate and compile data to answer. However, I was able to provide the auditor with the answer in about 30 seconds. With wide eyes, he asked what we were using because the search was so fast and efficient. I told him V-Log digital logbooks.”

Dave Heredia, 145 Repair Station and 135 Chief Inspector at Clay Lacy.

Clay Lacy Aviation is recognized the world over as one of the world’s premier international business jet operators. Since 1968 the company has lead the aviation industry in private jet transportation and industry innovation. Today Clay Lacy Aviation is a full service one-stop-shop for business aircraft, managing over 75 business jets from Learjets and Gulfstreams to BBJs; offering aircraft management, maintenance, sales, charter, avionics, interiors and FBO services.. To provide customers with executive turn-key services, Clay Lacy Aviation depends on expert systems and services from its vendors.

Challenge

Larry Hinebaugh, founder of V-Log, had an idea. Because of his extensive background and experience in maintenance operations, he understood firsthand the importance of aircraft logbooks. With over 30 percent of an aircraft’s value dependent upon its records, keeping these records safe is critical. Larry’s concept was to create a digital logbook software program with its own search engine for quick access. The program would serve as a back-up to actual records. He felt his software could revolutionize the aviation maintenance industry and he wanted to share his idea with a premier operation. Clay Lacy Aviation was the obvious choice.

Solution

Larry had done business with Clay Lacy for many years so he approached company President & CEO Brian Kirkdoffer to share his plan for digital aircraft logbooks. Immediately intrigued by the concept, Kirkdoffer saw the potential value of V-Log’s Aircraft Digital Logbook. He felt there was a need for a product like V-Log, as the service was not provided by anyone else in the industry.

Clay Lacy involved several people in the inspections department who were involved creating logbook entries on a regular basis, to examine and evaluate the V-Log software. Soon they were implementing V-Log and training top technicians in its operation. “CLA’s main draw to V-Log was the search engine Larry created,” said Heredia, “its unique search capability can search all folders in seconds. It’s incredibly fast – the best I’ve ever seen.”

Working with V-Log was also easy. V-Log employees came to the facility, took the logbooks off site to scan them with professional scanning equipment, and returned them the next day.

Results

For the past 10 years, since the inception of V-Log, Clay Lacy Aviation has been using V-Log Aircraft Digital Logbooks in everyday operations for its managed aircraft. The product has continued to improve as V-Log refines it, adding greater and greater value to subscribers. One improvement, logbooks managed with V-Log are now “in the cloud” – making data and record sharing across geographical distances no longer an issue.

This is particularly helpful as CLA performs maintenance at Boeing Field Airport in Seattle (BFI) and McClellan-Palomar Airport in San Diego (CRQ). If a technician in California needs information on an aircraft in Seattle or New York all they need to do is access V-Log’s online database.

“Larry and the leadership at V-Log have been very aggressive at improving the product, nothing in our industry comes close to offering the search capability and ease of use that V-Log does,”

Clay Lacy Aviation President & CEO Brian Kirkdoffer.

Conclusion

The use of aircraft digital logbooks just makes sense. They’re safe, transparent and professional. With V-Log digital logbooks, Clay Lacy knows that if a logbook ever gets lost they can legally recreate it because they have all the records. It’s safety insurance. With millions of dollars in aircraft at stake, having records backed up is one of the best investments a flight operation can make. The more redundancy you can efficiently have in your operation, the better.
