AMARILLO, Texas - Oct. 28, 2015 - PRLog -- Amarillo, TX 28, October, 2015 More than 1000 advocates representing local businesses, families, schools, and other organizations are expected to participate in JDRF One Walk™ in Canyon on Saturday, November 7th at the Virgil Henson Activity Center on the campus of WTAMU.  The event is JDRF’s West Texas Plains Branch 15th annual Walk, and is one of more than 200 community JDRF Walks nationwide that bring together hundreds of thousands of people each year who share JDRF’s vision to create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). The chapter has set a fundraising goal of more than $157,000 which will help fund critically needed T1D research.

“Whether you have type 1 diabetes, know someone who does, or want to simply participate in an event that makes a huge impact on so many lives, JDRF welcomes you to our team,” Sheryl Valentine, Board President.  “Thanks to the incredible supporters of JDRF One Walk, the Panhandle community and supporters like Happy State Bank, Texas Tech, United Supermarkets, and many more, JDRF is able to direct even more funding toward important T1D research for the 1.25 million people with this serious disease. We are confident that together, we will reach our fundraising goal and ultimately be a part of turning Type One into Type None.”

JDRF One Walk is expected to draw an enthusiastic crowd of all ages, driven to support a great cause while enjoying an event that includes entertainment, lunch provided by the TCFA, and family fun at the WT Activity Center.   On-site registration begins at 9:00 am at the East entrance to the Activity Center.  The entire JDRF One Walk will be approximately half a mile, starting at the Grand Plaza on the WTAMU campus and ending at the Activity Center.

JDRF One Walk is the most powerful peer-to-peer fundraising program in the world for T1D, raising more than $68 million annually. Since 1992, this event has raised more than $1 billion dollars for life-changing T1D research—research that has led to breakthrough discoveries, many of which have already moved into clinical trials and real-world testing. Although there has been considerable progress, there is plenty more we have yet to accomplish. As JDRF’s flagship fundraising event and the largest T1D event in the world, JDRF One Walk provides the perfect opportunity to get more involved in your local JDRF community and show your commitment to creating a world without T1D.

In addition to the Walk, the Board of Directors and Roasters are presenting One Run, a 5k around the WTAMU campus.  Participants can contact the office directly at 806-356-6042 or register online here: http://www2.jdrf.org/site/TR/TeamJDRF/WestTexasPlainsBran...

“We are excited to be partnering with JDRF for this event to help fund important type 1 diabetes research,” said Cari Roach, Co-Chair, Happy State Bank.  Her co-chair, Marianne McCoy added, “We are inspired by all those living with T1D, and are proud to be part of JDRF’s efforts to rid the world of this disease.”

JDRF gratefully acknowledges its local corporate partners for JDRF’s West Texas Plains Branch Walk including Amarillo National Bank, Warren CAT, Amarillo Children’s Clinic, TTUHSC Internal Medicine, WTAMU Department of Nursing and Applied Sciences, McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Schlotzsky’s, KAMR, Medtronic, Northwest Texas Hospital System, Homer’s Backyard Ball Foundation, Southwest Retina Specialists, and Valero.  Ford and Lilly Diabetes have partnered to welcome individuals new to One Walk at the New Family Tent. About Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.
