WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oct. 27, 2015 - PRLog -- Assemblywoman Catharine Baker, 16th District, was the guest speaker at the family-friendly Yours Humanly 5K Run/Walk & Kids' Fun Run at Heather Farm Park, on Sunday, October 18, which drew hundreds of runners, walkers, participants, sponsors, and supporters.

"I was personally heartened to see the number of families and friends who made the event a shared experience to help others who so desperately need our help," says Sunny Singh, founder and executive director of Yours Humanly, an East Bay nonprofit that funds both domestic and international efforts to provide access to education for underserved and disadvantaged children. "We've received overwhelmingly positive feedback about how exciting the event was and how much fun people had enjoying fresh air and exercise and knowing that they were supporting a great cause."

Singh noted that many people came just for the Kids' Fun Run, "which demonstrates our belief that even children have the power to empower!"

More than 57 million primary school-age children worldwide do not have the means to enroll in their local schools. According to UNICEF, despite progress in recent years, girls continue to suffer the severest disadvantage and exclusion in education systems throughout their lives. Proceeds from the Yours Humanly event will provide educational support to underserved girls in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally.

Kicking off the race were eight members of the Northgate High School Madrigals, who sang a moving A cappella rendition of the National Anthem. After the 5K run/walk, kid favorite Chuck E. Cheese led boys and girls in the Kids' Fun Run. Assemblywoman Baker handed out awards to top male finishers John Butler, Concord (1st), Jonah Johnson, Pleasant Hill (2nd), and Suvan Shangle, Dublin (3rd); and female top finishers Jessie McCann, Walnut Creek (1st), Lark Chang-Yeh, Walnut Creek (2nd) and Zulema Collazo, Orinda (3rd).

One of the strongest and most visible event sponsors was P2P Transformation Center, which also formed a large team of runners—many in pink tutus—who participated in the 5K race. With three San Francisco Bay Area locations, P2P is dedicated to helping clients drop weight, lose inches, and find themselves through instruction, encouragement, and guidance.

The 2015 Yours Humanly 5K Run/Walk was also sponsored by Shor Media Group, Mechanics Bank, Jack's Restaurant & Bar, Young Explorers, Clif Bar, Sports Basement, The Sean Brock Foundation, 92.1 KKDV, Mike Kirwan Photography, Bags Travel, and Autopia.
