NEW YORK - Oct. 25, 2015 - PRLog -- The really big thing, is getting your child more quality sleep every day, not just the night before the test.

Surveys conducted by the National Sleep Foundation (http://www.sleepfoundation.org/sites/default/files/sleep_and_teens_report1.pdf) reveal that teenagers are getting nowhere near nine hours of sleep a night. The average weeknight sleep duration for 13-year-olds hovers around 7 hours 42 minutes and decreases to 7 hours 4 minutes in 19-year-olds.

When Edina, Minn., shifted its high school start time from 7:25 a.m. to 8:30, the district reported that students were getting more sleep with fewer sleep disturbances and on the whole received better grades. Most shockingly, the SAT scores of Edina’s top students rose from a pre-time shift average of 683 math/605 verbal to 739 math/761 verbal one year later.

Even small sleep differences make a big impact. increments of just 15 minutes can add to better scores. Every study done shows a similar connection between sleep and school grades.  Teens who received A’s averaged about fifteen more minutes sleep than the B students, who in turn averaged eleven more minutes than the C’s, and the C’s had ten more minutes than the D’s.  Every fifteen minutes counts.

Tired teens can ’t remember what they just learned, for instance, because neurons lose their plasticity, becoming incapable of forming the synaptic connections necessary to encode a memory.

The more kids learned during the day, the more they need to sleep that night.

On a test, a tired brain gets stuck on a wrong answer and can’t come up with a more creative solution, repeatedly returning to the same answer it already knows is erroneous.

8 hours is considered the “Performance Enhancement Point.” If you can get your child 8 hours or more of sleep a night, they’ll actually perform at a higher level.
