Robert E. Lee’s Orderly  A Modern Black Man’s Confederate Journey, Set For Its Launch

Al is a member of Civil War Roundtable in Jackson, MS and wishes that more African Americans study the Civil War.

His book, Robert E. Lee’s Orderly A Modern Black Man’s Confederate Journey partly reflects on his own journey and tries to encourage others to delve deep into the crucial part of their history. It tells the story ofTurner Hall, Jr. or “Uncle Turner,” a slave who happens to be the ancestor of the author. Uncle Turner was an orderly for two Confederate soldiers and General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War.

What began with the discovery of a newspaper caption that said Turner Hall, Jr., served Robert E. Lee as an orderly in the Civil War, led to an amazing journey for the author who found out more about his ancestor, a proud Black Confederate. As a slave, he was owned by another famous Civil War general, Nathan Bedford Forrest. But it is interesting to note that Turner Hall, Jr. held both Civil War generals in high regards well after the war was over.

To his amazement Al also found out that Turner Hall, Jr. was a respected man in the community of Hugo, Oklahoma and was commemorated by Blacks and Whites as their most distinguished citizen for his contributions during the Civil War. The astonishing man lived for a hundred and four years and his contributions were well documented. The author draws the connection with his ancestor, a respected Black Confederate and makes a case of honoring his Confederate heritage through his book.
