Pota Coston, First African American Fayette County Commissioner (Posthumous) & Christy Sims Burned With Acid by her Boyfriend and  now an advocate for Domestic Violence Awareness Among Honorees

(Atlanta GA, October 19, 2015) Join Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta (CBC) for the Annual Salute to Black Mothers ”Wind Beneath Our Wings” Saturday, October 24 at the Atlanta Marriott Gateway Hotel, 2020 Convention Center Concourse, Atlanta 30337 at noon. Tickets are $40 each.

Honorees include: Education Award, Evelyn Hawkins Hood, Past International President of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; Business Award, Lisa Nicole Cloud, Women’s Empowerment Network (WEN); Community Empowerment Award, Christy Sims, Christy Sims Foundation; Corporate Award, Pamela Cross, Wells Fargo; Distinguished Merit Award, Rev. Betty Holland, Holland Institution; Political Award, Pota Coston, (Posthumous) First African American Elected to the Fayette County Commission; President’s Award, Patricia Russell McCloud, Russell McCloud & Associates and Religion Award, Rev. Wendy Smith Martin, Greater Victory Christian Center.

Honoree Commissioner Pota Coston passed away from breast cancer. Her award will be presented by Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Dee Dawkins Haigler and accepted by her son Bernie Coston and members of Delta Sigma Theta East Point College Park Chapter.

Christy Sims will be honored for her courage in empowering women who are victims of domestic violence. Miss Sims herself a victim, was doused with acid by her boyfriend and received permanent disfiguring injuries. She testified in court against her former boyfriend and Andrew Fordham was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison for the attack. Miss Sims has established the Christy Sims Foundatoin to advocate for domestic violence awareness.

Churches in the metro area have submitted their own Woman of the Year, Overcoming Woman of the Year and Young Woman of the Year

Rev. Betty Holland is CBC Board Member and Women’s Division Chair. Sophia Burns is CBC office manager and luncheon co-chairs are Jada Dawkins- Hudspeth and Diane Larche’.

Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta under the leadership of the President the Rev. Frank Cornelius Brown, is the primary proactive and principle centered organization comprised mostly of African American ministers and laity. Our mission is to provide leadership, advocacy to the homeless, helpless and hopeless in our community.
