Dr. Tricia Liebenberg is a specialist in Homeopathy and  member of the Victory Medical Centre. She was interviewed for her specialist views on Hay Fever. This interview covered various topics on Hay Fever. What hay fever is, what the symptoms are present and as some special treatments. Hay fevers effects affect people in Spring. The interviews first airing was during Spring for People’s Weather Channel 415 on DSTV.

“Homeopathy is a holistic health care profession,” says Dr Tricia Liebenberg. “It aims at treating the individual, and not the disease.”. Despite the name, “hay fever is not a fever at all” says Dr. Tricia Liebenberg. Hay fever is something which affects many people in the spring season. All it is is your bodies allergic reaction to an inhaled substance. There are allergens in these inhaled substances, and the most common one is pollen.

The reason it is referred to as an allergy is because it is your body is reacting in a hypersensitive manner to an inhaled substance. This makes this substance an allergen and these can differ from person to person.

As you inhale the allergen, it triggers the immune system to release substances known as your IgE antibodies. These antibodies in turn act on mast cells to release chemicals such as histamine. The histamine leads to the inflammation.

An inflammatory response is a protective mechanism. It is intended to eliminate the causative agent. Unfortunately, this process also causes harm to the bodies own tissue. This is where the sensation of swelling, heat and pain comes from. It can also result in the excess fluid and redness.

The symptoms are:

Early phase:

This occurs within minutes. Sneezing, itching mouth, ears, eyes and nose, a stuffy and runny nose and watery red eyes.

Late phase:

This is a result of the continuous inflammation taking place. Headaches, postnasal drip, facial pain, fatigue, irritability and poor sleep.

Diagnosis of Hay Fever should be done by a health care professional. This is the safest method when considering the impact which these symptoms can have on your life.
