Follow on Google News | LiceDoctors Sees Steep Rise in Incidence of Head Lice in Houston, Texas and VicinityLiceDoctors Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service reports that in Houston, Texas, they are seeing a very high incidence of head lice. The return to school and increasing resistance of lice to chemical treatments add up to a glut of cases of lice.
By: LiceDoctors LiceDoctors has known for years that lice are resistant to chemicals. "We have seen it first-hand on many families who have used chemical treatments and still have active cases of head lice. People apply the treatment, following the directions carefully, and then become very frustrated when they see more bugs a week or two later." reports owner, Karen Sokoloff. "A recent major study by researcher, Dr. Kyong Yoon at Southern Illinois University confirms that, head lice across several states manifest resistance to chemical lice remedies." According to Dr. Yoon, "We are the first group to collect lice samples from a large number of populations across the U.S. What we found was that 104 out of the 109 lice populations we tested had high levels of gene mutations, which have been linked to resistance to pyrethroids.” Wendy Beck and Karen Sokoloff, owners of LiceDoctors Lice Treatment and Nit Removal Service, are on a mission to spread the word to parents that chemcial lice treatments are often ineffective and may have side effects. As lice treatment veterans, they have seen thousands of cases of head lice that are still active after having been treated with chemical shampoos. “Increasingly, we are seeing clients who have used chemical products, and still have live bugs which is cause for concern,” according to Sokoloff. "Today’s head lice have morphed into creatures that are now dubbed super-lice by lice experts due to their increasing heartiness. The lice laugh at these products." The National Pediculosis Association in Newton, Massachusetts, www.headlice.org, the leading public advocacy organization in the US, has a web site that lists several studies showing lice resistance to a variety of pediculicides. Fran Altschuler, president of the organization, stated at a conference in Stockholm that, “while chemical treatments, pediculicides, and broad spectrum antibiotics develop resistance and potentially adverse health effects, nothing compares to the kindness of a comb.” The Center for Disease Control in Australia (CDC) released a finding that increasing resistance of lice to (chemical) products and concerns about toxicity and side effects supports possible changes in lice treatment recommendations. Examples include changes from chemical treatment to non-chemical lice treatments including occlusive head lice products, as well as combing. LiceDoctors uses a combination of occlusion (suffocation) “Our plan is 100% safe and 100% effective,” states Sokoloff, "Since families who use chemical head lice treatment products often end up trying a variety to get one to work, and often end up missing school and work, and spin their wheels doing loads of laundry, it often is less expensive to call a professional lice removal service as soon as you first discover head lice in your child. We apply oil, comb thoroughly and then when the hair is dry we meticulously hand pick the lice and nits. That is the only way to ensure that you have put an end to a case of head lice.” In the Houston, cases have been reported to LiceDoctors from Baytown, Friendswood, Bellaire, Humble, New Caney, Katy, Missouri City, The Woodlands, Pearland, Spring, Stafford, Sugar Land, Tomball, and more. LiceDoctors can be reached in the Houston area at 713-966-6116. LiceDoctors also makes house calls to families in Texas in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso and all surrounding areas.
