Florida Drivers: YOU Can Help “End Breast Cancer”

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - Oct. 16, 2015 - PRLog -- For over a decade, Florida drivers have played an instrumental role in the fight against breast cancer in Florida. Thanks to all who have purchased the “END BREAST CANCER” specialty license plate, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation (FBCF), the organization that receives the funds generated from the sale of the plate, has been able to award over $4 million to Florida organizations and institutions since the plate’s launch in 2002. Now, Floridians have another way they can help. Beginning October 1^st, coincidentally, also the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a check-box for “END BREAST CANCER”will be included on the list of nonprofit organizations to which Florida residents can donate when renewing their auto tags and driver licenses. By checking the ““END BREAST CANCER” box, they can make a donation of $1 or more to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation and continue the fight against breast cancer.  All funds remain in Florida to fund research projects and community education programs for Florida residents. Signed into law on July 1, 2015, this is FBCF’s inaugural year participating in the voluntary contribution program through the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

“We have made great advances in research, but there is still much to be done. The number of those touched by breast cancer, whether they are patients, family members, or friends, is so great that when there are runs or walks for breast cancer, regardless of the organization sponsoring the event, thousands upon thousands participate, ” states FBCF Executive Director, Russell Silverman.

Funds to be collected from the voluntary contribution check-off program, and currently from the END BREAST CANCER license plate, will be distributed through a grant process and awarded to Florida institutions for research in an effort to find more effective ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat breast cancer. Monies also provide funding to grassroots, nonprofit organizations throughout the state for community programs to educate underserved populations of their breast cancer risk.

This year alone, an expected 231,840 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. and 15,470 of those women will be from Florida. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. Breast cancer ranks second in cause of cancer death in women (American Cancer Society, 2015).

The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation asks for your help in continuing to raise funds for breast cancer research and education by purchasing the “END BREAST CANCER” specialty license plate and donating to the foundation by checking “END BREAST CANCER” when renewing your auto tag or driver license. Florida drivers can purchase the specialty license plate for an additional $30 each year--$25 of which is returned to FBCF-- and show their support for ending breast cancer. Together, we WILL end breast cancer!
