By: South Nassau Communities Hospital “In addition to being an outstanding emergency medicine physician, Dr. Sharma has demonstrated a broad understanding of professional practice administration and patient management,” As senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer, Dr. Sharma will be responsible for facilitating medical staff interactions with hospital administration and the governing board and for assuring the effective and efficient delivery of quality medical care consistent with the mission of South Nassau. He will also oversee strategic planning and execution, as well as the implementation of care management programs, and monitor the effectiveness of management practices and productivity indicators. “I look forward to this opportunity,” Prior to joining South Nassau in 2014 as the hospital’s medical director for utilization, Dr. Sharma served at Progressive Emergency Physicians, where he was the chief operations officer responsible for strategic planning and operations; oversight and development of existing and future contracts, and contract negotiations with third party payers. From 2007-12, Dr. Sharma held senior administrative positions at Catholic Health Services of Long Island, including chair of the department of emergency medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and medical director of patient safety and simulation center. Designed and implemented by Dr. Sharma, the center is utilized by an interdisciplinary, inter-professional team of physicians, nurses, educators and human factors engineers who work side-by-side with a particular focus on patient safety and quality. A member of the American College of Emergency Medicine and American College of Medical Toxicology, serving on the practice and education committees respectively, Dr. Sharma launched his career in medicine at Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was the director of the division of toxicology and an attending physician in the emergency department from 2001-05. He then moved on to Victory Memorial Hospital, serving as chair of the department of emergency medicine until 2007. Co-author of papers published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, Academy of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America, Dr. Sharma has authored chapters published in clinical textbooks, including Rosen’s Textbook of Emergency Medicine; 5-Minute Pediatric Emergency Medicine Consult, and Goldfrank’s Toxicologic Emergencies.
