SYDNEY - Oct. 15, 2015 - PRLog -- Name Change for ASHM

15 October 2015

The Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM) has formally changed its name to the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM). This change was voted on at the recent Annual General Meeting. ASHM will continue to use its acronym and existing logo.

“This change has been a long time coming,” said ASHM’s CEO, Adjunct A/Prof Levinia Crooks AM.

“It reflects the range of work that we do and have done for many years. We hope that the change in name will mean that membership is more enticing for our colleagues who work in viral hepatitis or sexual health, but who don’t work specifically in the HIV space.”

The change was widely supported across the sector, with a range of organisations and individuals putting their names to the recommendation which was passed with only one dissenting vote at the AGM.

“ASHM has been working in all three areas since the late 1990s, yet it has not been reflected in our name,” said Crooks. “Now we are seeing many progressive HIV organisations taking an interest in viral hepatitis. This is being reflected very clearly in conferences, where viral hepatitis—both as co-infection and also mono-infection—is commanding program space.”

Crooks said the change was the result of the workforce interest.

“Sexual health and HIV have always been inseparable,” said Crooks. “It was what our members were asking for. This is an exciting change.”

ASHM is a peak organisation of health professionals in Australia and New Zealand who work in HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Founded in 1990, ASHM draws on its experience and expertise to support the health workforce and to contribute to the sector, domestically and internationally.
