HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The location, stories passed down from owners and artifacts discovered on the property indicate the possibility of the property being location for confederate troops during the Battle of Albuquerque, stables for the Neosho Pony Express, being part of El Camino Real and located in the Atrisco Land Grant.

Carl and Donna Londene have opened their home to local as well as international guests to include hosting, on behalf of Albuquerque, the International Sister Cities Conference social.

Television personalities have been married on the property which has also been the site for an award-winning video, music videos, advertising location, practice location for New Mexico Stunt Actors and Mime Experiment Theater among many other activities throughout the past years.

DESCRIPTION of property

Red Horse Vineyard is a property that was homestead in 1870. The original adobe house is still in use as a shed. The tar paper and wood house crumbled but a photo of it in the book Call The Vet by Carl and Donna Londene and a window from that house is now placed in the game room of the new addition. http://callthevetbook.com/callthevetbook.html

The current house being used for the B&B was built in 1922 and is a two story Terrone adobe made from bricks formed in the pasture. At one time, the property was a large dairy. After the barn burned, as reported in the Albuquerque Journal, the dairy closed.

The property, Londene Farms, produced winning race horses and prize winning 4-H animals.

COMMUNITY

Red Horse Vineyard is also known as Londene Farms. This property hosted many community events over the years such as the Bernalillo County 4-H, South Valley Little League, South Valley Exchange Club and Chamber of Commerce, Albuquerque Sister Cities events, School events for the children and grand children who attended Rio Grande, Harrison, Barcelona, Western Heights, Albuquerque Academy, St. Charles and St. Pius.

The corrals provided boarding stables and area for riding lessons. Every other year, the property hosts a BBQ for the visiting delegation from Helmstedt, Germany which is one of Albuquerque’s Sister Cities.  Other Sister City delegations have enjoyed the property’s warmth and relaxation.

New Mexico Tourism

The house is filled with artifacts discovered on the property and the history of many items is highlighted in each room.

New Mexico artists are featured through mediums of paint, sculpture, pottery and ceramics, stained glass, music and writing. On site are a ceramics studio, painting facilities, winery, gardening, orchards and recreation.

Local area businesses are partnered with to encourage small business growth in the South Valley. A local coffee roaster exclusively provides coffee for the B&B, spa services are provided by a local spa in a corn crib dating back over a hundred years, trail rides are provided by Orona’s Horse Ranch less than a mile away. Rio Bravo Brewing Company provides beverages for guests.

DESCRIPTION of Unique Remodel

The main house was carefully remodeled by Dreamstyle Remodeling of Albuquerque to preserve the historic nature and construction of the house begun in 1922. Adobe walls were strengthened and unique features were woven into the new design. Great effort was taken to utilize each original feature of the house and property.

With owners having a long history of military service, it was important to create a B&B where wounded veterans and their families could relax and escape. Therefore, the new addition was designed to accommodate guests on the ground floor as well as those who need accessibility. Common areas are wide and bathrooms have barrier free showers with generous turning radius.

Areas were built to feature antiques and items that are of historical nature specific to Albuquerque and the South Valley. A window from the house prior to the current one is now integrated into the new addition. A museum style viewing window was built into the second story of the Terrone adobe. The unique wine cellar was reinforced for safety and support.
