Follow on Google News | Pediatricians Launch Program To Help Parents and Children Tackle PubertyBy: Turning Teen “Today’s kids have tremendous access to information at a very young age, often getting misinformation from unreliable sources,” Dr. Lisa Klein says. “Turning Teen provides girls with accurate information in a safe and comfortable environment, while also teaching parents how to continue the conversations at home.” Turning Teen recognizes the sensitive, difficult stages of adolescence and thus presents information in a creative way through the use of role playing and innovative activities. Turning Teen’s interactive workshops provide both the mother and daughter with age-appropriate, medically accurate information.Three different workshops are currently offered for girls ages 8-14, covering the topics of male and female anatomy, the physical and emotional changes related to puberty, how to care for a girl’s changing body, and reproduction. Future programs will be geared toward boys and their bodies. “Schools only spend a few hours a year talking about puberty and sex,” Dr. Carrie Leff says. “A doctor’s appointment doesn’t allow time to teach an entire course on these subjects. Parents have the best intentions, but often miss opportunities to discuss these sensitive subjects or don’t know what to say... so they say nothing at all.” Turning Teen helps start the conversation between mother and daughter and provides guidance on how to continue the discussion at home. Today it is more important than ever to raise young women who respect their bodies. Statistics show that respecting your body starts with understanding how your body works.
