NEW YORK - Oct. 8, 2015 - PRLog -- Robert Herman’s THE PHONE BOOK, published by Schiffer Publishing, is one of the first photography books that features photographs taken entirely on an iPhone, with the Hipstamatic app. Releasing November 28 from Schiffer Publishing, THE PHONE BOOK chronicles Herman’s international travels between 2010 and 2015, capturing the illuminating colors of the streets and landscapes of the cities he visited and the colorful people that live in these locales. From Naples, to Bilbao, Johannesburg to New York City, Herman’s focus is brilliantly depicted on the pages of THE PHONE BOOK, an iPhone map of the world. One might never suspect Herman used an iPhone camera to create the photos. However, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and Herman’s eye knew intuitively what to capture. When creating the titles of the photographs, Herman included the place, date, time, latitude and longitude. Thus giving each photo its own birth certificate and duly noting exactly where Herman was positioned on earth at the moment his finger tapped the iconic symbol, the Hipstamatic yellow button. Many will learn about the art of phone photography (and photography in general) from the images and pages laid out in THE PHONE BOOK. THE PHONE BOOK is the follow up to Herman’s self published debut (Proof Positive Press) photography book THE NEW YORKERS, released in 2013. Herman’s book immediately brought comparisons to Robert Frank’s The Americans. THE NEW YORKERS was shot in the streets of NYC on a Nikon F camera using a 50mm lens with the film that Paul Simon made famous in his 1973 hit song, “KODACHROME.”  Most of the photographs featured in THE NEW YORKERS were taken in the 80’s during one of NYC’s most raw and gritty transitional periods, a time of personal struggle and inner strife for Herman. He expressed himself through his camera and when he published it years later, the book was well received.

He shares about his work in THE NEW YORKERS, “Through the lens of my camera, my vulnerability met theirs at the moment of exposure: a photograph of someone whose heart is open to a stranger's camera says more about a New Yorker than I ever can in say in words.”  The book was well received by critics (The NY Times Lensculture Foreword Reviews), book lovers and respected photographers. It is featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s book store. THE NEW YORKERS put Herman on the map as a street photographer.

THE PHONE BOOK is an evolution of Herman’s style. Prior to its release the New York Times did a piece on the book comparing the two books entitled, “Robert Herman Squares New Photos With Past Work, Using an iPhone App.”  Equivalent to the value Kodachrome brought to his street photography, the Hipstamatic brought endless possibilities to his photos taken on the iPhone. Each photograph expresses hope, stimulation, transparency, light and connection with his surroundings. Herman will be addressing national and international audiences for book signings and workshops at book stores, museums and galleries over the next year with new dates being added daily. Several anticipated events include, his participation with a workshop and exhibit in September at the International Festival of Photography in Gallipoli, Italy and he will exhibit at the Amerikahaus / American Consulate in Munich, Germany in October and a return visit to Frankfurt in 2016.  Herman’s in store appearance later this year at the Apple Store in NYC’s SoHo district on Tuesday, December 1, promises to be a highly anticipated collaboration. There is a fascinating image in the book (which Herman calls his homage to Marcel Duchamp’s “Bride Descending the Staircase) of the Apple Store, a multi-layered futuristic look from the outside in and it is Herman’s way of acknowledging the manufacturer of the iPhone and the Hipstamatic app creators, that empowered him to capture the photos.

With a foreword by Mary Ann Lynch, (three-time IPA award winner) she describes Herman’s talent, “Contemporary street photographers often speak of the “Zen-like”, timeless, or transcendent moment - when the image comes into view and the exposure is made at precisely the right time. In this, Herman is a master and innovator. Throughout, his careful technical and intuitive choices create enthralling images distinct from one another which, singly or together, can summon a deeply personal response.”  With a Notable Mention at this year’s prestigious px3 Paris going to Nick Phillips of PHINK for his design work on THE PHONE BOOK, the question is, will “THE PHONE BOOK,” one day be considered part of the pantheon of photography books?
