FLINT, Wales - Oct. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- A talented UK cake artist has created a masterpiece to raise awareness for endangered animals in support of the World Wildlife Foundation.

The project is a collaboration of 29 of the most respected cake artists from around the world, the project is aptly named ‘Bakers Unite to Fight’. The idea is to highlight the threat to endangered animals. Vicki Smith, 27, from Incredible Edibles based in Flintshire, North Wales created an amazing Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth from Panama (see photos). There are 28 other cakes in the collaboration, showing the plight of animals from Penguins to Galapagos Land Iguanas. A selection of these cakes will go on display at Cake International in November, then a number will be chosen to go on show at the WWF head office as educational tools for children.

Vicki’s Sloth cake may be an amazing piece of art but it is completely edible, however this sloth is off the menu for now. 85 hours of painstaking intricate work went into creating this masterpiece, from creating the complex eyes and fur along with the tree it sits which was so realistic that during the making of the cake a bee tried to set up home in the knot of the tree.

Raising awareness for the plight of this species, Vicki explained the current situation, “The island of Panama currently houses a small group of these Sloths, studies show that there are less than 500 left on the island but there are fears the number could be lower than 100. This, among the many other endangered animals worldwide is why I decided to get involved in this project.”

Vicki went on to describe her feelings during the making of this cake, “It was definitely a love, hate relationship throughout the making, sometimes adding the fur individually and sometimes in strips but the painstaking task was all worth it when the isomalt eyes went in and I instantly fell in love.”

A close friend of Vicki’s was also involved. Danielle Gajra of Kaykes a cake business based in Bolton created a African Wild Dog, an animal reducing in numbers at an alarming rate. Only 6,600 remain but disease and the needless killing of these animals threaten their very existence. The cake is fully airbrushed from white, and standing 2 foot by 2 foot.

Vicki Smith is currently working on a new project for this years Cake International and continues to make some of the most incredible wedding cakes you have ever seen. You can connect with Vicki on social media (links below).
