How to Speed Up Your Metabolism ?

Oct. 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Ever wonder why your best friend can inhale a burger and fries or eat an entire bag of movie popcorn and never gain an ounce? The answer lies within the metabolic rate. Yes, it is all about the metabolism. While genetics, weight, age, exercise and overall dietary habits play a part in weight gain or loss, these are all minor elements when it comes to metabolism.

According to the latest research findings by Dr. Pamela Peeke, author of Fight Fat after Forty, a woman in her thirties or forties can tweak a few things in her lifestyle and gain the metabolism back that she once had in her twenties. If you have been wondering how to speed up your metabolism, you have arrived at the right place. We went to the experts to find out what they are saying about cranking up that internal fire in you – your metabolism.

Eat Your Breakfast

Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day and by skipping it, as we will discuss later on, you are doing your metabolism a disservice. People who eat breakfast on a regular basis are more likely to lose weight than breakfast-skippers.

During rest, or sleep time, your metabolism slows down. When you wake up in the morning, your metabolism needs to be revved back up, and this can only be done by fueling it with the right kinds of foods. Breakfast should include whole grains, plenty of protein and lots of fiber.

Don’t Over-Cut Calories

Many people believe that in order to lose weight they must drastically cut calories. This mindset can actually cause damage to the metabolism and slow it down. When you cut your calories by a significant amount, your body will work hard to defend your usual weight and preserve the pounds because it believes you are in starvation mode.

Rather than dramatically cutting calories, reduce them slowly by 200-300 increments and monitor your weight loss. If you are hitting the gym seven days a week, the calorie cut will need to be watched carefully.

Eat Often – Don’t Skip Meals

Rather than skipping meals to lose weight, you should fuel your body every three to four hours with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods. Eating smaller meals several times a day can actually rev up your metabolism and improve your weight loss efforts. When you skip meals, especially breakfast, your body has a tendency to go into starvation mode and preserve the fat. This can be detrimental to losing weight.

Drink Cold Water

We have all heard the mantra, drink eight – 8 ounce glasses of water daily in order to maintain optimal health. This is certainly true, but you also need to make sure that those eight glasses of water are ice cold. The colder the water, the more energy is required to warm the water up inside your body.

If you are working out regularly, you may need to increase your water intake to compensate for the water loss during exercise. Perspiration and breathing rates are increased during work-outs and can cause the body to become hydrated if water is not consumed. The last thing you want is for your body to register that you are hydrated and send the metabolism into conservation mode. This can cause bloating, muscle fatigue and even headaches.

Get Plenty of Rest

Sleep experts agree that those who get less than six hours of sleep on a regular basis have a tendency to become overweight. Those who get a restful seven to eight hours of sleep each night are more fit and have a highly effective metabolism, barring they are eating right and getting enough exercise. Getting enough sleep can help you to combat stress more effectively and become less emotional, all of which aids in the improvement of your body’s metabolism.
