Southeast Texas Cowboy Wins Conroe Bull Mania
Oct. 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Southeast Texas cowboy and in-house favorite 2015 CBR and the 2012 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association World Champion bull rider Cody Teel of Kountze, Texas, took center stage Saturday night, riding five bulls to win the Conroe Bull Mania, the fourth stop on the Mahindra Road to Cheyenne. Competing for the first time this season in his native state of Texas, Teel battled four World Champions and five bulls to win his first CBR event title in the 2016 season and launch his bid for back to back World titles.

According to Teel, the big decision was what bull to go with between Championship Pro Rodeo’s Cadillac Red or Platinum Gold for his Shoot Out bull.

“I have seen Platinum Gold twice and he sort of has a reputation of pulling guys down, so I knew he would be a handful, but he usually goes to the right which he did tonight and he really bucked good and it worked out.”

Before the buckle and the big check was presented, Teel would do battle with 16 of his colleagues who also posted scores at the Lone Star Arena. Aaron Pass kicked off the fourteen qualified rides posted in round one of CBR’s tournament style competition riding Jeff Harris’s new bucker, Bad Blake for 87 points. National Finals Rodeo qualifier Chandler Bownds answered with an 88, followed by Reid Barker’s command of Baker and Hurst’s 2 Sexy for 87.5 points.

After a mishap in the chutes, Teel would be offered a re ride and decided to take the same bull, 274 Easy Money of Terry Williams’ on the re-ride option. The second time around resulted in a second re-ride option for Teel, and on his third bull in round one he would post an 87 to advance to the semifinal round.

Jonathan Brown, the Houston cowboy making a strong bid to return to the CBR tour, was 90 points on JQH’s Jack Tar and took the lead of the event. World Champ Sage Kimzey and the No. 3 ranked PRCA rider, Brennon Eldred, would post scores to advance as would current CBR leader Mahindra Young Gun Cody Rostockyj.

But the most impressive ride of the statistic chart would come from Elliot Jacoby on JC Knapp’s Corpus Red. Jacoby’s 91.5 points would earn him the round one title and Knapp would receive two Hy O Silver trophy buckles on the ride for High Marked Ride and High Marked Bull of the event.

It took an 85.5 to advance to the semifinal round where the field of 29 riders was whittled to twelve. Powered by the CBR Bull Team Challenge, the semifinal round took a rank turn and Bownds and Teel would be the only two riders to survive and post scores. Bownds would earn 89 points to win the semifinal round with a perfect ride aboard Jeri Harmon’s and Mike White’s Kojack. Teel, who came out of the chutes behind on Jaynes’s EG4133, would stage a comeback for a hard earned 86 points.

The final four Shoot Out round would get underway with Jonathon Brown, Elliott Jacoby, Cody Teel, and Chandler Bownds. Bownds by virtue of his 176.5 highest average score would select first and he chose the perennial favorite Black Betty from Rawson Bucking Bulls. Teel selected Platinum Gold, a bull who has not been ridden since April, leaving Brown and Jacoby with Cadillac Red and Carson’s Victory from Cude and Williams respectively.

Brown, riding away from his hand, bucked off at 4. 6 seconds. Jacoby would stop the clock at 2.98 seconds leaving the two veterans Teel and Bownds dueling for the title.

Benny Cude’s Platinum Gold turned back right in the gate and began picking up speed with Cody Teel at the wheel. Teel found himself in the well and it appeared he was bucked off, but then the bull made one big jump allowing Teel to get re-centered and hear the 8 second whistle and an 89.5 score.

Bownds, who selected first and chose Black Betty, a bull he has been on twice, scoring 91 points on him in Del Rio, had a solid seat from the beginning of his final four ride. Betty who did not have his usual high flying trip, assisted Bownds to an 89.5 score to tie the round with Teel. CBR rules and regulations call for the tie-breaker decision in the hands of the back judge which gave Cody Teel the advantage and the win.

Teel, after missing two of the first four events on the 2015 Mahindra Road to Cheyenne season, moves into the top ten in the CBR World Standings for the young season.

CBR Bull Team Challenge Conroe edition was won by Jeff Harris and his partner David Kielhorn of –D Cattle Company. Harris and Kielhorn won with 284.21points, just .99 points ahead of JQH Bucking Bulls. Harris had this to say about his bulls’ performance.

“It seems every time I show up with a new bull I win the bull team challenge. My bulls bucked really good tonight.”

Harris, who arrived in South Texas with a shiny new toy named Bad Blake, a son of M17,  paired the new bucker with his rock solid anchors, 955 Shorty and 911 Bargin Bin. Aaron Pass was 88 on Bad Blake while Taryl Smith bucked off of Shorty at 7.26 seconds. Surprising both stock contractor and rider, Sage Kimzey lost control of Bargin Bin at 6.95 seconds in the semifinal round, but the time ridden added to the solid bull scores was enough to send Harris to the winner’s circle for the $20,000 check, Hy O Silver trophy buckle and a pair of custom Fenoglio boots.

Also taking home a slice of the $190,000 CBR pie was the winner of the CBR’s Championship Futurity League World Finale. The future of the bucking bull industry was on display Saturday morning with 69 bulls bucking for $115,000 in prize monies. The team of Carpenter, Hudgins and Johnson beat the field of 23 bull teams and took home the lion’s share of the purse, a $50,000 check, for their trio of two year old buckers’ outstanding performances at the Finale.

Jay Hudgins’s 313 Zorro De Torro, a Zorro calf that he raised, anchored his team with the highest bull score of the day, 91.5. 313 is an accomplished competitor with over 25,000 in earnings this year. Danny Johnson provided the second and third strikes for this team with 208 Sledge Hammer and 199 Special Agent Johnson posting 89 and 87 points individual bull scores. Hudgins Carpenter and Johnson were 267.50, 1.5 points ahead of D & H Cattle Company’s Bulls Gone Wild team.
