This Weekend, A Colorful Arts And Literary Festival For The Latino Community Comes To Providence

Feria del libro features music, poetry, dance, discussions and personal appearances by authors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Oct. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- More than 30 Latino writers as well as musicians and dancers will gather in Providence this weekend to present lively, interactive presentations of Hispanic arts and culture. Ferio del Libro y Las Artes de Providence, a two day festival, will feature Cuban author Yanitzia Canetti as keynote speaker, plus cultural entertainment for adults and children in the form of dance, storytelling, poetry, music and craft tables. Feria del Libro will take place at the Providence Career and Technical Academy, 41 Fricker St, Providence, RI  on Saturday, October 3 from 9:30A.M. - 5:30PM and Sunday, October 4 from 9:30A.M. - 5:00P.M.. Entry is free.

Highlights of the weekend include a panel discussion about the PBS documentary of Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, led by renowned Brown University professor, Julio Ortega; spectacular displays of folk dancing by performers in colorful costumes from the Center for the Arts & Culture of the Americas, Grupo Folklorico Puertoriqueno, Ballet Gualalupano and Los Cibaenos; and fun activities for the children, including storytimes, crafts and songs.

Ferio del Libro y Las Artes de Providence is presented by Providence Community Library and has been made possible with generous funding and support from the American Library Association, the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Providence Schools, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island and Sodexo. An associated visual art exhibition, Somos Latinos in America, is now running at the Atrium Gallery, One Capitol Hill and will feature a special reception on October 15.
