ST. LOUIS - Sept. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- With more and more banking conducted on mobile phones and tablets, web-enabled handheld devices are increasingly becoming targets of criminals looking to obtain consumer personal and account information.

“Often remotely and without your knowledge, criminals are using malicious systems that will not only harm your mobile security but may also steal pertinent information,” said Tim Cook, Senior Vice President, Product Management, First Bank. “This can lead to identity theft or fraudulent activity on your account.”

Also known as malware or spyware, among the latest versions of these systems are Loozfon, an information-stealing program, and FinFisher, used to take over mobile device components.

According to Cook, there are several methods that criminals will deploy to lure mobile device users including:

·         Promises of work-at-home employment with profitable paydays.

·         Enticing users to visit a fictitious web link with the intent of compromising your mobile device security.

·         False text messages that are disguised as mobile system updates.

To avoid being a victim of mobile malfeasance, First Bank recommends the following steps:

·         Be sure to turn off any unused features of your mobile phone in order to minimize its vulnerability to malware and spyware.

·         Review your phone and its security features. Some devices assist with mobile phone security by having encryption available to help protect your personal data.

·         Before downloading any program or visiting any link sent to your mobile device, be sure to be aware of the permissions and any access you are giving the sender.

·         Activate your screen-lock feature after any period of inactivity. Be sure to password protect your mobile device to act as a first layer of protection to your mobile phone device.

·         Avoid clicking on unknown sources from any communication channel.

·         Be aware of any applications that can track your geographic location as these can assist criminals in potential stalker and burglary activity.

·         Ensure your mobile phone security is up-to-date with the latest reputable malware and spyware protection.
