FEATHERSTONE, U.K. - Sept. 30, 2015 - PRLog -- Skanska UK Highways Unit awards Route One Highways Bridge and Structures Division with a quarter of a million pound contract to work as part of the construction team on the Highways England M1 Junction 19 Improvement Scheme.

Contracted to provide specialist bridge deck waterproofing and expansion jointing works Route One have already completed the mammoth task of waterproofing 6700 square meters of bridge deck across three bridges, in separate visits; one on the M1 over the M6 to the new A14 link, the M6-M1 Southbound link over the M6 to the A14 link, and the M6 - A14 Link over Swinford Road.

Overcoming challenges the Route One team were quick to adapt and find a working solution when constraints and design changes resulted in the bridge deck of the second largest structure, the M6-M1 Southbound link, only being accessible to the Operatives via a large temporary staircase. The team engaged the use of a crane to lift specialist plant and materials needed onto the bridge deck.

Darryl Taylor, Commercial Manager at Route One Highways says: “So far the contract hasn’t been without its challenges but the determination of our team has resulted in works being carried out to programme.

“Working collaboratively with the Skanska has proved to be a real success and we look forward to completing the whole scheme at the end of November 2016.

With three more bridges to complete Route One will be embarking on the A14 M1 Northbound link flyover, the M1 Southbound - A14 link over the Local Road Network, and the M1 Northbound - M6 Link over Swinford Road in the coming months.

Located in Leicestershire, Junction 19 of the M1 forms the intersection between three major parts of the motorway and trunk road network - the M1 and M6 motorways and A14 Trunk Road. The existing junction suffers from several problems including congestion, delays and long queues that in turn contribute to accidents that can result in serious injuries and fatalities. The proposed improvement aims to relieve congestion at the junction, making the roads safer and decreasing journey times.

Route One Highways is a privately held company based in Featherstone, West Yorkshire and provides quality structures and highway maintenance services across the UK.
