Local Eagle Scout, Andrew Campbell, named Susan M. Fezzey Award of Excellence winner

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Sept. 29, 2015 - PRLog -- In January, local Eagle Scout, Andrew Campbell, decided to dedicate his Eagle Scout project to the betterment of young children’s health, well-being, and academic success, by supporting the mission of Sweet Dreamzzz, Inc., through fundraising efforts. Sweet Dreamzzz™ is excited to announce Campbell as the 2015 winner of their Susan M. Fezzey Award of Excellence.

Campbell set a goal to raise $2,250 for the sleep education materials and bedtime supplies necessary to serve 150 low-income elementary-age children in the Detroit area. He surpassed his goal by raising $3,418, enough to completely fund a R.E.M. (Rest. Educate. Motivate.) Sleep Education Program at Gardner Elementary School in Detroit.

He raised the funds by holding three different fundraisers. The first was a “Free Dress Day” at his high school, Catholic Central. Campbell raised $1,165 by arranging a day for students to dress down, as opposed to wearing their school uniforms, for $2 each.  He raised $700 from a can and bottle drive, and then reached out to his family, friends, and Sweet Dreamzzz supporters with an online fundraiser, raising over $1,000.

Campbell’s efforts served the 273 K-5 students at Gardner Elementary School. The R.E.M. Sleep Education Program is a unique program that deals with nighttime - a period in a child’s life that is rarely addressed. The program is twofold, bringing both warmth and comfort to the children as well as vital information they need to ensure a good night’s rest. The R.E.M. Sleep Program starts with a 30 minute presentation, educating the children on the importance of sleep and good sleep hygiene habits. After the presentation, every child receives a sleep kit that includes: a brand new sleeping bag, reading book by sleep professional, Dr. James B. Maas, Sweet Dreamzzz t-shirt, toothbrush and toothpaste.

In total, Campbell spent 117 hours on this project and also recruited his troop members to help him.

This award, named in honor of Susan Mary Fezzey, honors one volunteer each year for their hard work, kind efforts, and dedication to the Sweet Dreamzzz mission. Fezzey has been involved with Sweet Dreamzzz since the organization’s inception in 1998. Her efforts include: supporting fundraising efforts, serving as a committee member, networking for Sweet Dreamzzz and volunteering her time as a Sweet Dreamzzz Sleeper Teacher at various sleep education programs.
