Healy Consultants: Germany wins as EU ministers approve a quota plan to host migrants

This decision by the EU interior ministers comes as a relief to Germany whose aging population and low birthrates is threatening the very economic future of the country.

"Coping with the influx of refugees will demand a lot from Germany," Weidmann told the Süddeutsche Zeitung, a German national daily, in an interview. "But it also brings with it opportunities."

A study conducted by Bertelsmann Institute earlier in the year revealed recently that Germany will require around 500,000 new immigrants each year until 2050 to maintain its work force.

“Germany must become an attractive immigration country permanently because its social security systems, public budgets and the labour market will get under pressure due to the demographic changes,” said Jörg Dräger, a board member of the Bertelsmann Foundation

The same study warns that over the next decade and a half at least half of the qualified work force in Germany will be retiring, creating the deficit.

Germany, whose economy is ageing fast, has also been found to be struggling with a shortage of skills and undergoing financial strains due to the heavy health and pension insurance systems that are both funded by the government as a higher percentage of the workforce reach the retiring age yearly.
