Follow on Google News | October Exhibit at the Geary Gallery in Darien, CTBy: Geary Gallery Featured Artist, October: Peter Arguimbau In the words of Geary Gallery proprietor, Tom Geary, “Peter Arguimbau is truly an artist of our generation to watch for in the art world, as it is apparent he is rapidly approaching ‘tier one’ status.” Born in Darien, CT and a longtime resident of Greenwich, Peter Layne Arguimbau is a nationally-acclaimed, classical-realist painter who has specialized in the Flemish Technique (popular during 1450-1650) for more than 40 years. This technique was developed from years spent recreating the Luminist tradition of the Dutch guilds in the Golden Age of painting. Arguimbau first learned to paint at age eight when he spent hours watching his father, Vincent Arguimbau, a portrait painter in his studio in Darien, Connecticut. His formal art training included an internship with restorer, Pierro Manonni, and he trained at the Instituto del Restauro in Rome under Cesare Brandi. He also studied for 14 years with Frank Mason at the Art Students League and at Mason’s studio in Little Italy in New York City. After 20 years working with the Maroger oil painting medium with dastardly results, Arguimbau formulated his own gel medium using harder resins ground from powders. Primarily using raw materials, Arguimbau has been able to maintain a signature, consistent quality. Like the work of the Flemish Masters, Arguimbau’s paintings have an extreme, yet timeless, luminous quality. At his specially designed studio in Greenwich, CT— an 1850s chestnut barn—the north wall is all windows covered with shutters to control the amount and direction of the light. He modeled this light technique after the studios of the Dutch masters to get his luminous effects. Arguimbau's marine and seascape paintings have that luminous look of old world art. His prize-winning works are in the collections of yachtsmen, corporations and even European royalty. Arguimbau is also a versatile painter—he paints the life around him, including portraits, animals, and even religious subjects. He describes himself as a classical artist painting in the Flemish Technique, grinding his own paints in oils that he cooks. During the past 40 years, Arguimbau has perfected his techniques and is now assembling his book, “The Invention of Oil Painting from the Renaissance to the Present.” He also teaches painting courses at his Greenwich studio.
