SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Oct. 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Mara Purl, whose Milford-Haven novels and short stories began rocketing to the top of the Amazon and Barnes & Noble best-seller lists in 2011, and who has since won 28 book awards, based her original story on real locations on California’s Central Coast. Now, to honor her story’s origin and setting, she’s helping to raise awareness of the region’s severe drought by using her celebrity status on stage as well as on the page.

“We all know wet and dry seasons are cyclical in the West,” said the author. “But as weather patterns have continued to change with the shifts of global warming and the pressure of increased population, the water situation has gone from inconvenience to dire circumstances. I began researching and including these issues in my Milford-Haven series years ago. We don’t want tourism and the joy of visiting the Central Coast to dry up as well. My hope is that by bringing attention to this issue, I can help increase awareness both locally and nationally. We set up a crowdfunding at www.GoFundMe.com/SeaMarksCambria for those who'd like to support the production.”

Purl will spend this autumn in the region both to co-star in a well-known play, and to speak at several local events. Following her appearance at the Central Coast Book Fair, she’ll be Keynote Speaker for The Monday Club of SLO, guest speaker at the SLO NightWriters professional writing group, and Keynote at the Rotary of Morro Bay. She will also be one of five cast members in the November 9th staged reading of The Other Woman, sponsored by The Women’s Shelter Program of SLO. Purl, a former board member of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will follow the performance by speaking briefly on the issue of domestic violence.

When she’s not speaking, or writing chapters for the next book in her best-selling series, Mara will be rehearsing and performing. Sea Marks, the Gardner McKay play that first brought her to Cambria in 1984, opens for a month-long run at the well-known Pewter Plough Playhouse on October 9th. Performances will be held Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm through November 8th. Tickets may be purchased at www.PewterPloughPlayhouse.com.

Mara is former cast member of the NBC drama Days of Our Lives and enjoyed playing the recurring character “Darla Cook.” She then founded a production company and created Milford-Haven U.S.A., a serial drama loosely based upon Cambria. The show, co-starring a well-known L.A. based cast, became the first American radio drama to air on BBC radio where it enjoyed a following of 4.5 million listeners. Purl’s story later came to the attention of New York publishers Bellekeep Books/ Midpoint Trade. Since then, her books have become national best-sellers. Mara has an on-line following of several million. She is a frequent guest on radio talk shows, speaks for the American Heart Association, for women's organizations, for writers' conferences and for colleges and universities.
