IconoClassic Opera presents: Carmen, a drinking opera!

New York, NY - IconoClassic Opera, which is devoted to bringing innovative

opera to a new audience, presents “Carmen,” a playful and immersive production of Bizet’s

timeless tale of sensuality, obsession and death. In this intimate and innovative staging by Paul

Deines, a cast of opera singers perform around and among the audience. It’s grand opera as

you’ve never experienced it before. Enjoy a beer or a glass of wine as the cast transforms the

space into a Seville taverna, a mountain wilderness, a toreador’s bullfight.

IconoClassics’ “Carmen” focuses on the title character (played by Sarah Greenspan) , a

gypsy-woman so alluring, so free, and yet so alien, that she drives her lovers to the brink of

madness. Carmen’s affair with the tormented soldier Don Jose (played by Kyle

VanSchoonhoven) reveals at once her otherworldly sexual power and her vulnerability in a

society that views her as disposable. Drawing conceptual inspiration from such modern

influences as the Ukrainian feminist art movement and the women’s punk scene of the Pacific

Northwest, this “Carmen” is as vibrant and heedless as its protagonist.

Carmen is being performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe located at 236 East 3rd Street

New York, NY 10009. The production runs about 2 hours and 20 minutes, with two short

intermissions (aka booze breaks). Carmen premieres Saturday, October 3rd at 2pm, with an

additional showing Thursday, October 8th, at 9pm. Tickets may be purchased through the

Admission is $20 in advance, $24 at the door and $13 for students with valid ID (student tix

available at the door).
